I appreciate these insights because I felt like a fish out of water entering SdC a month ago. It caught me by surprise - and so the next day wen I wandered into the lovely and welcoming atmosphere of Pilgrim House, I was so moved. In fact, I sort of hid out in the back garden area until I could...
I just did this in March 2019. Renfe did not post trains until about five weeks before our trip. We took the train from Madrid ChaMartin - it departed at about 130 and we arrived in Sarria about 7 PM. The Renfe site is quirky ( and their virtual assistant, Irene, is downright creepy with her...
I actually just did this my last day on the Camino in March 2019 - our Santiago accommodation was an AirBnb. I contacted the Airbnb host and asked if they thought it was possible and they said yes, it happens with some frequency, just write down their phone number and address on the envelope...
Great suggestions ..... I am already a Spanish speaker so I didn’t need this for my Camino, but I have used Duolingo app for travel prep to other countries. It gave me what I needed to ask for bus routes by number in Italy, etc. It’s wonderful even to just have the basics - and helps make...
Loving these suggestions - and yes - on the train ride from SdC back to Madrid, I already started planning my next Camino.
I work as an interpreter for young Hispanic families with special needs children - how sweet to realize that my pilgrimage can continue through my service to them
Great idea! I am in SdC now, having just walked across those bridges in and out of Portomarín a few days ago. Cross over the “second” bridge to minimize the height.
We are the same, starting in Sarria or Samos mid March because that’s when airfares were a bargain. I’ve looked into private albergues and many are not open yet, but there are options in Samos and Sarria and the major towns / Brierley stages. I will definitely check the long range forecast...
I read a study on the benefits of taking time off work to “get away from it all”. I’m not certain how it was measured, but the results showed that the planning of the trip was as beneficial emotionally and mentally as actually going on the trip.
I would agree. Last winter was my first winter...
Thanks 😳😬. For me it was, “Grab the cheap airfare to Madrid and ask questions later” so i’ll Be packing warm layers and rain gear for this first Camino. An adventure!
I’m looking forward to reading replies from seasoned pilgrims since I’ll be just a week or so behind you. Was hoping to stay in private rooms, but having trouble finding places open in early March between Sarria and Palas de Reí.
Awwww Judy, I am so sorry you lost your son. As a mom, I cannot imagine.
And .... Good for you for walking the Camino in his honor. I’ll be on that path before Spring, just Sarria to Santiago. I was going to walk it solo - a statement to embrace the solo journey I am now on as a widow, but...
hi Jo,
hi Jo,
I am also a Jo from the U.S., also a recent widow, getting ready for my first Camino, and second-guessing myself. I am merely a hiker wanna-be, but I’ve got two months to change that. I appreciate the insights and advice posted here, hoping not to bring along all my...
