Death of American pilgrim in Castromaior today

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Travel options from south Hampton to Ferrol/a Coruna

What a lovely idea to do it by ferry. Travelling as a foot passenger, you'll have a much lower carbon footprint than by plane as well. Sure, the ferry is more expensive but no need for airport transfers, and you get to see the sea. I'd love to hear how you get on. You've inspired me!

    Estrella Galicia merch in Santiago

If you know anything about the history of pilgrimage, you'll know that pilgrims always, always bought souvenirs along the way - and they certainly weren't all pious ones...

    Estrella Galicia merch in Santiago

Yes, Nikis is your best bet. When I was walking the Portugués, I was once served a beer in an Estrella Galicia glass with a 'La Casa de Papel'/ 'Money Heist' design. Never have I wanted to nick a beer glass more. Luckily my lightweight rucksack was my conscience...

St Michael's Way, Cornwall - article from The Guardian

Nice article! Here are a couple of pictures from my day walking it last June. I bivvied outside St Ives and started there - where there is an easy-to-find holy well called Venton Ia, dedicated to St Ia and just by the beach.

Crazy things people do in the last 100 km

I walked the last few km into Santiago barefoot both times. It was nicely refreshing on the feet.

What to read on the Voie du Puy?

On the same tack, if you like detective fiction I'd recommend Fred Vargas' quirky, archaeology-and-myth-based Inspector Adamsberg series. They are set all round France and Adamsberg himself is based in Paris, but comes from the Pyrenees. 'Seeking Whom he May Devour' is set there. They're terrific.

Interesting sites along the Portuguese Caminos

If you are interested in Spanish literature, the Casa-Museo Valle Inclán in Vilanova da Arousa (on the Variante Espiritual) is a lovely little place to visit with some fascinating artefacts. It's open till 9pm in the summer, so it's a nice activity once you've got in and had a shower. Or in the...

    Pole Poll

The main reason for using walking poles is so you can revisit that great cafe where you stopped for a cafe con leche, and inevitably left them behind... 🤦‍♀️

I arrived in Santiago and didn't see a single pilgrim.

Ooh that's good to hear about the Invierno. I'd like to do it soon and am really glad to hear how steeped in camino history it is. You've spurred me on!

    Finally a camino tattoo

Love your tattoo, Beatrice! Great place to have it on your wrist, so you can see it all the time. Here's mine, on my upper arm.

    Getting my Compostela home undamaged

The cheap trick, taught to me by a camino companion who was a former engineer, is to get a large water bottle, cut the top off, and dry it thoroughly. Put your Compostela inside and stuff the inner with clothing. One free Compostela transportation device!

    Brands of clothing (merino wool)

I wear Icebreaker and they are fantastic. They're fine to wear 7-10 days without odour. A plea to everyone who shops for merino clothes: please buy non-mulesed merino only. Mulesing is a barbaric practice where strips of skin are removed from a sheep's rear end, without anaesthetic. Let's keep...

    St Michael's Way, Cornwall, UK

Hi Kenneth, I walked it a few weeks ago and wrote about my experience of it - see link below. It's a beautiful walk with lots to recommend it. There's a wonderful moment when you get to the top of the first hill and can see both coasts at once. The Friends of St Michael's Way website is very...

Rochester to Canterbury - Augustine Camino or Pilgrims Way?

Hello Barbara, what a wonderful thing to do with your granddaughter and her mother! I can only advise on the Augustine Camino because I haven't walked the Pilgrims' Way. I thought the AC was absolutely beautiful. Aylesford Priory was a real highlight for me and definitely worth staying at -...

Starting the Camino Inglés in Cornwall

Hi Steve, hope you have a good time! Yes, I did. I missed a couple (didn't start at Lelant itself) but found 5 or 6, using the website. The church in Marazion has two: one for Marazion itself, and one for St Michael's Mount in case you can't get on the island (e.g. on Saturdays, when it's shut)...

Starting the Camino Inglés in Cornwall

Hi Peter, sorry for a slow reply. I used the list provided by the Friends of St Michael's Way on their website. The message at the top says they took the stamps away during Covid, but they are back now. http://www.stmichaelsway.net/passport/4594059506.html

Starting the Camino Inglés in Cornwall

Today I walked the St Michael's Way, a 13-mile route from Lelant on the north coast to St Michael's Mount on the south, following the ancient route that Irish and Welsh pilgrims used to take as they made their way by ship and on foot to Santiago. The route has been authorised by the Cathedral of...

Tips for walking in the heat

Excellent tips! To add to the collection: I take a linen towel or a sarong which I drape over my hat and shoulders as a portable sunshade. I sometimes give it a soak, which is delicious in the slightest breeze. It can double as a towel, sheet, curtain on a lower bunk, matador's cape ...

The Forum has become the home to "lost glasses"

As someone under 50 who just stood at the supermarket checkout wondering where I'd put my shopping bags - the bags I was carrying under my arm - I'd say that all this losing things has nothing to do with seniors 🤣
