    Alternative to Allianz travel insurance

I don’t know if they offer coverage to non-US, but I have used them for years and the annual pricing qoute pops right up when I enter, policy type and my name, age & ZIP code.

LIVE from the Camino Do not climb over this fence

My rule when crossing fences, beware of (a) dogs and (b) bulls.

    Asics running shoe durability

I’ve worn Brooks Dyad11 for the Camino. They are short lived but suit me perfectly. I get about 400 miles out of them, then use them back home as biking shoes (I don’t do clips). Overall, a costly approach but suits me for comfort and lightness.

Rethinking my CF-ish route after Burgos (and I start in 7 days!)

Not that it needs any further promotion, but the Meseta is a true pilgrim experience not to be missed, especially if you are serious about “walking meditation.”

    What's a Slow Walker?

I’m a “normal” walker, that being whatever I feel like that day or hour.

    Electrolytes

I started having electrolyte issues at about 70 YO. After a trip to the ER for dizziness and rapid pulse after a jog, I started using Nuun tablets in a bottle of water. They work fine and are easy to carry; I buy the box of 8 ten-count tubes online. Not the most flavorful, but works.

    Re-considering zip-off convertible pants

I have three pair of REI "cargo" pants with zip-offs that I rotate for hiking. They have abundant pockets and are quick-dry. I usually take two pair on Camino. Not a favorite of the fashion police, but work for me. Never had the irritation issue.

Camino etiquette - passing others on less-busy caminos

I like to walk in the early Spring when it’s somewhat uncrowded, especially in poor weather or outside the very minor surge of that time. Approaching from behind, I usually try to make enough noise to be known, but also to make some pleasant comment as I pass…about the weather, scenery, etc. If...

Topography - does it really matter??

In the US Army, the most dangerous thing in battle is a second lieutenant with a road map,

Topography - does it really matter??

Yes, probably over simplified. I'll have to check with my aching bones and get back to you. Happy & Safe Trails in 2024! P.S. That is a beautiful topo map.

Are you planning your (next) camino? Well, I am

Very well said. I planned a lifetime of Caminos during COVID and walked two of them in 2022 and 2023. Didn’t stick to my plan either time. No idea right now where 2024 will lead, but it will be on a Camino.

    Meseta

Here is what may be their stamp and my mark on the Brierley map. I was on a leafy boulevard adjacent to the riverside park .

    Meseta

A hostal across the river on the left, can’t remember and no record of the name. It was basic and in March. I was the only one there I think.

    Meseta

Indeed! Very charming little village, stayed there last March but you were apparently not open or I could not find it. Stayed in a bland, but nice place across from the bodegas.

    Meseta

The inn across from the San Martin church in Fromista and the Monastery San Zoilo outside Carrion were two of my favorites. I walked up to San Zoilo without a reservation and got the pilgrim rate. Absolutely wonderful place.

    Meseta

I walked that last part arriving in Leon on a Sunday. But after the peace and solitude of the Meseta in late winter, I was not into the bustle and tourist thing and kept walking. Doubled back later for the Cathedral and a day in Leon.

Favorite Pilgrimage Memoir *Not* Set on the Camino Francés?

If you define pilgrimage broadly, consider Seven Pilars of Wisdom by T.E.Lawrence, Motoring With Mohammed by Eric Hansen (don’t assume the title is indicative), or Full Tilt by Durvla Murphy.

Second short Camino Tui to Santiago

When are you going? Three of us did it in April 2019 without lodging reservations. We walked up to the parador just over the bridge in Pontevedra and got a really cheap rate, don’t remember exact rate but less than we paid for a couple of hotels along that camino. It was a nice 5-star break; we...

    Walking in November - where?

Admire your spirit. Late winter early Spring is best for me. I don’t book ahead and have never not found accommodation where I chose to stop. Sometimes I’ve had to ask around a bit; usually a local bar will know of a place, or offer a room. However, I take a four season sleeping bag to...

Protest signs along the Camino near Santiago

My rule is to avoid all protests of any type in foreign countries, even if I think I can read the sign or understand the chats. My understanding of the issues is bound to be incomplete at best, and I don't know what went before that might trigger the authorities, and in any case, it's likely...
