Camino Frances in May or June - which would you prefer?

I started my Camino the last week in April and I could not have picked a better time. Still some cool mornings and all the wildflowers were all in bloom. You will be at least a month on the Camino, so one month from early June puts you into July for the last 1/3 of your pilgrimage. It might get...

Advice please - Norte or CF or??

Jenny gives good advice. The steep descent is what kills your feet and knees!. Get GOOD shoes with lots of toe room. Get 2 sizes larger than you usually need. This keeps your toes from being jammed into the toe of your shoe on the long descent and you will avoid blisters. And use walking sticks...

Advice please - Norte or CF or??

I did it at 69 and going over the Pyrenees was rough. Get GOOD shoes that fit well and have LOTS of toe room. If you start at Pamplona, the road will not be so rough, but it will be demanding on your feet. And use walking sticks.

Do you carry an umbrella for the Camino?

It all boils down to: If you are afraid of the weather-STAY HOME on your porch. No sun, no rain, no mud, no blisters, no Spanish coffee, and NO Camino de Santiago EXPERIENCE!!!

Do you carry an umbrella for the Camino?

No, it is just more weight to carry. Get a quality, light poncho and a wide brimmed hat. Remember weight is the most important thing on The Camino and water is heavy enough.

Le Puy: it took me 60 years. Spoiler: geology

The clerk at the end of the Camino asked me the reasons why I walked. I answered: Religious, historical, cultural, and geological. I am a geologist. But I was bummed because at the end of the day I was so tired and my feet were so sore that I could not go climbing around looking at the rocks and...

    VF from Aosta to Rome

I forgot to add: Make sure to get the Via Francigena app on your phone. There are not a lot of signs at times on the Via to keep you on the right track. Try to cross the Po River by the ferry. The Italian gentleman that runs the boat if a very colorful character!!

    VF from Aosta to Rome

I walked from Aosta to Rome in 2019 and started in September. Towards the end of October it gets wet. You will walk through lots of muddy trail. The ostellos are fewer and farther in between. Lots of them are closed in October so you might have to call to find one open. I had to walk 35 km one...

    Etroubles to Aosta OR Quart?

In 2019 I walked from Aosta to Rome. I LOVED Aosta and wished I had spent more time in the city. Aosta is full of ancient Roman stuff and medieval things to see, but I was in too much of a hurry to get on the Via Francigena. Coming down out of the Alps is fantanstic. What scenery!!! But when...

    France to Italy

Why Lucca? why not down to Rome? St. Francis made the journey down to Rome

    France to Italy

Hi, Jennifer. I walked the Via Francigena from Aosta, near the French-Italian border, down to Rome in 2019. You will find Italy beautiful, but not as accommodating as Spain for Pilgrims. The ostellos are fewer and farther in between. It will depend on what time of year you start your journey...

    When was your first Camino?

    That happens a lot!

    When was your first Camino?

Booking ahead for a bed is alright I guess, but that does not allow for the unexpected. I have found that once you make a plan, it quickly goes to crap!!

    A new take on shoes

I was waiting in Pamplona for some new boots from the USA, as my feet were hurting from my current boots. They got to Madrid, but Madrid would not send the boots to Pamplona! Why? I don't know and never found out. So I went to a shoe store there in Pamplona and the nice lady brought out a pair...

    Starting out....

If you don't take the Camino to Roncesvalles and Zubiri you won't experience the relief and the sense of accomplishment of walking over the Pyrenees in the footprints of Napoleon's Army. Anyway, that is my opinion. It was a grueling march but I am glad I did it.

    Caminos one after another

I did the Via Francigena one year after completing the Camino de Santiago. I was i great shape when I got home and I found that all my old clothes fit! I was 69 for the Camino and 70 for the Francigena. Anytime I thought about being bored I would remember that countless millions of Pilgrims...

    Starting out....

I started out carrying way too much stuff. I read the Camino book before I went and it made me paranoid. So I took too much stuff that I had to toss out. It is like that in any long march. The Union soldiers on the march to Bull Run for the first battle of our Civil War started out carrying...

    via francigena question

You "heard" but I know from first hand. I didn't make it up. I fully expected the Franciscans to be hospitable but they were not. I could not believe my ears when the brother told me I was a rich American and go get a hotel rooom. I read 4 books about St. Francis when I got back from The Camino...

    via francigena question

I finished the Via Francigena in late November 2019, just before the Corona Virus hit Italy.. It is very easy to get lost so you will need to get the Via Francigena app on your phone. It is a GPS tracking app that tells you where you are in relation to the Via. The albergues, or ostellos, are...

    Carrion de los condes

One of the most spiritual and uplifting religious experiences of the whole Camino de Santiago Compostela was at Carrion de Los Condes! The singing sisters gave a small performance with audience participation (very emotional!), then the Pilgrims's Blessing, and finally the Pilgrim's Mass. Up to...
