Vicious dog around Pajares/San Miguel del Rio?

Before you reach Pajares, after Puerto de Pajares. You will come down from a big green field, cross the highway and rejoin a footpath on the opposite side. Then after following the footpath, you will see a wooden signpost which indicates 2 options: via San Miguel del Rio or Pajares. For those...

"The British pilgrimage problem" - magazine article

Yeap, this is the reason we have lost centuries of "pilgrimage culture" which now the British Pilgrimage Trust is trying to revive, as per the original article. It seems to me that British saints and pilgrimage sites mostly dated back to medieval times, like 6th-9th centuries. Some of these...

How much water is ‘plenty’ on the Hospitales?

There is a water fountain by the church in Lago, 5 KM after Montefurado. So, not as far as Berducedo, a bit better. Unless you stay in Samblismo, which is the last place before the Hospitales, there is vending machine in Borres (good for those starting out further back from Campiello). So from...

Fiction to read while on the Camino?

Also not forgetting Matthew S Wilson's very own "Once Upon a Camino"! Looks like the 3rd one of the trilogy was recently released hence the podcast etc. The 2nd and 3rd books are available on kindle unlimited, which I subscribe to, but the 1st book is not (!) so I'm now contemplating if I...

Walking in warm weather when not used to it.

Don't drink just plain water but add an electrolyte tablet to replace some of the lost salt. It usually has a small amount of sugar as well so keeps your energy up. There are various brands so get whichever is available where you come from. Big cities/large supermarkets in Spain will have them...

"The British pilgrimage problem" - magazine article

Yes.... many of these British pilgrimages official websites have information about accommodation along the routes and although some have YHAs and other budget hostels, they don't cover the whole stretch! Scotland allows wild camping but errrr there are very few days in the year that I would like...

    Rain pants or not ?

I would bring rain pants especially if you wear rain jacket and not poncho (like me)! Often when it rains, it rains. For a whole day of rain on the Camino, a pair of rain pants will be a life saver. I do tend to feel warmer than many others esp when walking. So if it’s going to be a warm day...

    Daily costings

Yes, I think the housesitters should start small with local listings. The couple I met on the Camino did local sits for about a year, then the husband quit his job, did the Camino, sold their house, now they're on their 2nd year I think of "professional" housesitting and they did the Camino...

Northern Cross pilgrimage to Lindisfarne, England

So... walk across when tide is low, stay overnight on the Island, pray that there's no crazy cult murder (read too many DCI Ryan series), then return in the morning?

Camino is Finished but not done Walking

No first hand experience on the South West Coast Path because when I'm in Cornwall I'd like to relax on the beach and eat fresh seafood from one of many many Rick Stein establishment :D Cornwall gets incredibly busy in the summer so I'd suggest avoiding the summer months and school holidays...

First rescue of the season on the Route Napoleon

Do you know if someone calls out for help, will they have to pay for the call out?

Northern Cross pilgrimage to Lindisfarne, England

ok that’s it! We’re doing it 🤣 you know when you started with a little idea at the back of your mind, and then it keeps popping up left right and centre. I bet now my google adverts will start advertising guided St Cuthbert’s Way walk everyday! Also recently hooked on LJ Ross’s novel, her DCI...

Camino is Finished but not done Walking

To be fair at the end of every stages of the Welsh Camino there was a very good pub, sometimes with their own craft ale, a few hundred years of history, and some ghosts…

Camino is Finished but not done Walking

It’s so hot and sunny today that’s why my list was very optimistic 😝 but we have Fish Friday and Sunday Roast! The Pennine Way has a good network of youth hostels, B&Bs, camp sites… not as cheap as Spain but 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Where to from Jaca?

Don’t take the bus just yet! You’ll miss the detour to Castillo de Javier (you’ll find details of this detour on apps like Buen Camino) and then for sceneries another detour after Sanguesa to Foz de Lumbier.

Camino is Finished but not done Walking

Come to the UK! We have all kinds of long-distance walks. Some are pilgrimage routes, some just nice hiking routes, or both! Welsh Camino or here or here: just under 2 weeks long, lush green countryside, a nice waterfall, forest trails that look like enchanted garden, and end with 3 days...

I bought them from Amazon, very cheap!

Has anyone come across any of these mythical beasts of the Iberian peninsula?

The reason pilgrims on Camino Primitivo no longer meets the cuelebre is because a local hero Xuan Rata had dealt with the beast who retracted into a Cave never to be seen again, near Montefurado. I didn't go inside the cave to look for cuelebre carcass though! But direction to the Cave Xuan Rata...

    Daily costings

This won't be for everyone but there is an app/web/company called TrustedHousesitters.com where basically homeowners/hosts advertise their vacancies and find housesitters. We don't pay the housesitter, they get to stay at our house and use the facilities for free. We have to subscribe to the app...

    Accommodation (book or wing it?)

Aaah I’ve just read this thread 🤷🏻‍♀️ From O Cebreiro to Santiago you should have no problem finding dog friendly albergues, especially if you are already booking every night in advance. The places we have stayed are big enough to accommodate 4 of you and the dog. Now there are many tour...
