I would suggest you monitor the Camino Frances activity on the forum in May 2024. September and May have similar numbers leaving St. Jean each year. This would give you a very good idea what September will be like.
I wish you the best of Camino experiences! But if you want to avoid the crowds leaving SJPdP, the first two weeks of September are not going to work well. Here is a link to an earlier thread, which has a graph of the numbers of pilgrims walking the first stage of the Camino Frances. You will...
Alicia, I appreciate your concerns, and each of them is totally legitimate. I recently returned from a 28 day Camino from Leon to Oviedo to Santiago to Muxia. The narrow paved roads were the most terrifying part of my trip. We also walked the Valcarlos route in 2014, and we did not see a single...
Great story Gumba. Predicting the weather is tricky, best to look at climate data. As to the draw of the Camino, I too have wrestled with this (for several years). On the other hand, it always seems like an odd question. Do we wonder why we love to golf, or surf, or rock climb, or play bridge or...
We've enjoyed our 3 times on parts, or all of the Frances. All three were great in their own way. Branching out to the Via de la Plata really expanded our view. There is so much more of Spain to experience. I really think the Spanish people that live along the less used routes express their...
We were offered a special room price and a 15E pilgrim meal at the Paradore in Villafranca del Bierzo in 2014. It was our one night of luxury on a 44 day Camino. (The evening a Peaceable Kingdom was also very nice, that year).
I know this does not solve any immediate problem folks are having finding a bed, but it's my soapbox so I'll stand on it. There are so many other Camino routes in Spain that have no crowding problem right now. We're just finishing up a 15 day hospitalero assignment in Zamora, on the Via de la...
The walk down to Mombuey would not be on a Camino, so you will not likely find anyone who has walked it. I have not walked the Invierno, so I cannot comment on that.
The Sanabres route is very similar to the Camino Frances from Astorga to Santiago in distance and terrain. If you walk from Astorga to Granja de Moreruela to get to the Sanabres it would definitely add a few days to the distance. If you did want to walk the Frances and the Sanabres, one...
You might check out the Facebook group "Friends of Dragonte". https://www.facebook.com/groups/2046541135572224/
I have not walked it, but I do know there are a few folks who have worked to improve the way markings, etc. Also, if you decide against the Dragonte option, there is also another...
This is really great info. The most common misconception I hear from first time pilgrims is that May and September are not going to be busy on the Camino. While it is true that they are not the busiest if measured by numbers entering Santiago, it is obvious from these statistics that if measured...
This spring on the Via de la Plata, I had a 75 year old pilgrim tell me this "Camino thing" is like a fever. Once in a while you think you have it beat, but then it comes back worse than before. He was on his 8th Camino. You are not alone.
There might not be any statistics, but most Camino veterans have meet a few octagenaians along the Way. It is a very personal decision based on fitness and desire, but is certainly possible. A modified schedule of short days can be considered also.
This sounds like it will be a great trip for the two of you. None of us know you or your son, but 22.5 days seems way too fast for any 14 year old. "Slow down" would be my only suggestion.
The Napoleon (higher) route is closed until April 1st. You will need to take the route through the Valcarlos valley. There is a wonderful albergue in the town of Valcarlos, about half way to Roncesvalles. Weather could be anything from beautiful sunshine to blizzard, even on the lower route. See...
Villafranca is a beautiful town. You don't have to go all the way to O'Cebreiro on the first day (I agree with the previous comment, that would be difficult). I would suggest a first stage to Ruitelan and a second day to Fonfria. Both towns have wonderful albergues and both days would be about...
