What not to miss on Camino Portuguese

Glad to hear from another discover of this great place. To me it is a "cathedral" for books. Easy to forget the time.....

What not to miss on Camino Portuguese

If you are a book lover and have the time, I suggest you get over into the upper city in Porto so you can visit Livrariia Lello. It is a bookstore with a magnificent stairway and books in many languages. I agree about Casa Fernanda by the way!

Starting from Lisbon — good or bad idea?

Oh yes to less comparisons/judgements. Here, and in daily life. I've followed Camino Frances and Caminho Portuguese and lots of other travel by car, train, plane, and sailboat. Feel my life has been made so rich through all the things I've seen, experienced, people I've met... "Viva la...

    My walking tour of Lisbon

Oh yes! I had the luck to find a furnished one bedroom in Campo d'Ourique with a view out over the city and a short walk down the hill to a transit stop! And of course the Market a short walk in the other direction. Nostalgia!!!

    Why Start in Lisbon

I, too, love Portugal and have lived there and in the Azores. At times, on tthe Camingo, I took a bus, or the local train, for a stage. The train is wonderful if part of your desire is to actually meet and connect with local people rather than simply trek through their country in the company...

Is the city of Braga on any route?

I lived in Braga for 2 years while working with Habitat for Humanity. It is a beautiful city; the main square has a cathedral on each of the 4 sides. There is a shrine on the north of the city, up by funicular or STEPS. Friendly people - University students speak English. It was on the old...

    25th of April Monday!

In a pre-Camino period of my life, my former husband and I, by simple luck, were on our sailboat, docked at the harbor nearest where all this took place on 25 April, 1974. We had been in the Azores (Portuguese islands) not long before and literally no one would talk with us about politics in...

    A week in Porto

Have you been to Livraria Lello? Bookstore with amazing decor, occasional author conversations. If you love books it's worth a visit.

    Caminho from Lisbon April 2022?

Yes. Portuguese gained independence from the Salazar regime soon after Spain declared theirs from Franco, 1974. Called the Carnation Revolution because it was done with no bloodshed and there's a famous photo of a young woman putting a red carnation in the gun of a soldier.

    My walking tour of Lisbon

Thank you for the journey to nostalgia! I love Lisbon! Was there on April 25, 1975 when Salazar was overthrown, lived there in Campo d'Ourique (loved that neighborhood) in the '90s, and was back in 2018 when I followed the Caminho. Now SO far away, up here in the Pacific Northwest.

    My walking tour of Lisbon

I just want to mention that there are local and express buses, and trains, that can get you everywhere in the cities, and around Portugal, for a reasonable price. And, if you are going to Porto, there is an express train - 4 hours or so - and local train that stops everywhere

Sexual harassment Camino Portugues oct 2021

In a way it is like walking alone in any big city. There are a few pick pockets/thugs/whatever scattered among us so it’s wise to have a whistle handy, keep another person in view when possible, etc. using the whistle or yelling as loud as you can may be enough to unsettle the person so you...

Starting from Lisbon — good or bad idea?

Having been in Lisbon before, including living there for a year, I couldn't think of going to Portugal without spending some time back there before heading north . So much to see and do, music, museums, the waterfront with the statue of the "Discoverers", the market in Campo de Ourique...

I did that stretch without trouble.

Starting from Lisbon — good or bad idea?

Noting again: I could not go to Portugal without spending some time in Lisbon! Wonderful city with so many things to see. And it is the place from which those brave guys sailed who then “discovered” this continent. But I am in love with Portugal.....

Camino Portuguese is very nice, but...

I wore Keen sandals and had no issues with the cobblestones. Very glad they have not been covered with asphalt! The stretches on roads were what I found scary
