    Hiking Sandals only?

In 2022, I walked from Gibraltar to Muxía in Keens Newport H2 sandals. No sweaty feet. 👍🏾

    Hiking Sandals only?

I wore Keens Newport H2 last year from Gibraltar to Muxía, abt 900+ miles. I wouldn’t even consider trail runners again.

Footwear - Waterproof or not waterproof.

Try sandals. I just walked from Gibraltar to Muxía in a pair of Keen Newport H2 sandals. Never hot and wet sweaty. Waterproof will just leave feet hot and wet from sweat all the time.

    Hiking Trailers

I’ve never used on and don’t plan on using one. In my opinion, they look like torture devices. If I were not able to shoulder a full pack, I would look into luggage service (and pare down belongings).

Umbrella for sun and rain - buy good quality (expensive) or just use a cheap one?

I have a backpacking umbrella I paid $35-40 while on the Appalachian Trail. I had it on the Norte in June 2018 but mailed it home and bought a large cheap umbrella in Irún for more coverage. If you think rain will be moderate, go for a smaller, lightweight backpacking umbrella; otherwise for...

    Please review my packing List

In thousands of miles hiking, I’ve only used a box cutter, not a knife. Never had the need for anything else. Pack covers will not keep your pack dry in extended or heavy rain. Put a trash compactor bag inside your pack and your stuff will always be dry.

    sock cleaning

Use lip gloss sparingly on your toes if you feel the need. No mess. I don’t use it with toe socks. The fabric reduces friction between toes.

    Injinji socks

I switched from lightweight toe socks to use medium weight for the added padding between toes. Friction = blisters. Over the toe socks, I wear a lightweight pair of socks.

Where do you carry your valuables?

Valuables are on me or with me 24/7, never in my backpack. My go-to wallet with daily cash and half of my bank cards are clipped (via a grommet) in a deep, pants pocket. The other cash and bank cards and US passport go in a travel pocket that loops through the belt and hangs inside the pants by...

Do I need to pack waterproof trousers & jacket?

Waterproof clothing will only make you wet from the inside. On the Norte-Primitivo (mid-June to early July ’18) I always walked with pant legs zipped off. Legs didn’t get cold and with shorts there is less wet clothing to deal with. An umbrella kept my torso and head dry (no rain in the face)...

    Hiking Sandals

I just walked from Gibraltar to Muxía wearing only Keen Newport H2 sandals. Worked like a charm.

    Foot Care

    Wear sandals whenever you can.

SIM CARD that works in BOTH France AND Spain

EU SIM cards work throughout the EU. Buy one in France and it will work in Spain and vice versa. You may have few GB of data though. Bon voyage.

    To Poncho or Not Poncho...

Ponchos are cumbersome and not very effective. I threw mine away after 500 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then got an umbrella. Never have rain in your face or several meters of wet fabric in a hostel or tent. Great for sun too. No regrets after 5000 miles of use.

Bag size as an extreme sport

Hey, if it carries what you need and is comfortable, go for it.

    Hiking Sandals only?

I’ve done serious backpacking with Keen Newport Waterproof sandals. The Caminos are much less demanding.

    Favorite Toothpaste?

On long walks (Appalachian Trail, Via Francigena, Paris-Norte-Primitivo) I don’t carry toothpaste. Just extra weight that adds up. I do, however, brush, floss, and pick. : )

Will I need a Head Torch?

I have used a headlamp on other long hikes (Appalachian Trail, Via Francigena) but didn’t on the Norte-Primitivo and didn’t miss it at all. For me, it’s just another piece of unnecessary, redundant gear. Used my phone light a few times. Walking this year, but again without my headlamp.

    Socks (i hate cold feet)

Trail runners are all you will need. Your feet shouldn’t get cold while walking unless it’s through snow, which I doubt at that time. Walking in rain, feet shouldn’t get cold until stopping. Take a couple pair of thin and medium weight socks and play with configurations. Keep a pair dry for...

Leave your walking poles at home....

    Bravo!
