Storm Filomena: Spain sees 'exceptional' snowfall

Pelegrin is right. The polar vortex is making all this happen.

Socks colours - not a serious thread

Having had various items of clothing misappropriated by fellow pilgrims by mistake post laundry, I do my best now to bring unpopular or weird colors socks and clothing. It was absolutely no fun to find one of my only two pairs of pants gone, or one of my two pairs of undies, or socks disappear...

Do top bunks stop bed bugs?

The pilgrims I met who slept at Roncesvalle albergue one night, top and bottom bunks, all got bedbug bites. I did not sleep there fortunately. I have done some research on bedbugs. Bedbugs can live in crevasses on wood but not metal. So if the bed is wood frame it does not matter top or...

Does the Camino Ruin Us for Evermore?

Camino walking has ruined me only in the sense that dark chocolate has ruined me for milk chocolate, yet I still enjoy milk chocolate a lot. Given the choice I would go for dark, but I would love to have milk chocolate if I can't get dark. Actually the first of anything is no biggie for me. The...

Does the Camino Ruin Us for Evermore?

"striking off from SJPDP full of vinegar"? I must be missing something here. "striking off from SJPDP full of vinegar"? I'm not getting what you mean.

Why do pilgrims carry on when it is really hard?

David thank you for starting a thread that generated so many interesting responses to read in these lock down times. You are a very likeable person. Your question got me thinking too. While I echo many of the sentiments already expressed by others, I have one thing to add on the question of why...

    Something understood

Thank you Maggie and Robo for sharing. The program may have been discussed in other threads before but this is the first time I saw it. I'm glad the thread was not removed for that reason. I listened to the program and enjoyed it. Found many points discussed true to my experience: reaching...

    Pilgrim "customs"?

This is not a custom for everybody yet but many are doing it: carrying a washable/reusable trash bag to carry your used TP and other trash for disposal later in a trash can rather than leaving them on or near the camino. A personals custom that's very enjoyable is to attend vespers at every...

    On this date in September...

2014 on Sept 13, a warm day, I was in Ciruena, a place disliked by many. When I came to it I disliked it immediately too. However, just after passing the deserted development, turning off the camino to the left there is the old village, the original Ciruena. Near there I stayed at the Casa...

A Reservation system for the Camino de Santiago (Galicia only)

On the topic of the reservation system, whatever works for the Galicians will work for me.

A Reservation system for the Camino de Santiago (Galicia only)

There's something about Lorca. I have only made one unplanned stop ever, and that was in Lorca, just because it seemed right at the moment.

    Now I understand...

Pascual milk in Spain is good. Super on its own or with ColaCao.

    Avoiding the breakfast trap?

Yes. I had a stomach bug once and dared not eat for fear of hurling. I walked my normal daily camino distance for two days without food. I don't have much stored fat but I was fine on just water. It was fabulous walking as usual.

Is it a "Saunter" or a "Hike"? Our Pilgrimages.......

"The etymology of the word saunter features in an essay by Henry Thoreau (‘Walking’ published 1862) where the same reference to the Holy Land is made." "Thoreau’s explanation for the word saunter: from à la Saint[e] Terre, describing pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land. There goes a Saint[e]...
