Inviting reflections on the wider costs of walking a Camino

The only “new” kit I had were my boots and socks. Everything else was kit or clothing I have had and used on day hikes for at least 10 years.

    Bathroom/Shower/Toilet facilities in Albergues/Dorms

Last year saw more separate than shared facilities. No missing toilet seats. Always carry half a roll in a small zip lock bag in my pack (centre tube removed) as also good for “emergency stops”, wiping blood from a graze etc.

    Well done!

    Men's grooming

Yup, merino wool is a great blessing! After years of trying synthetics for camping and hiking I am now a committed merino base layer, walking shirt, underwear etc fan😁

    Men's grooming

You are walking 20-30km a day , sometimes in >30C and high humidity. Shirt, socks and underwear daily. Quick hand wash, sometimes shared a washing machine and tumble driers with others where available. All merino wool so dried in 3-4 hours. Took 3 of each in case rain didn’t allow a complete dry...

    Men's grooming

Started with very short hai (number 2 on the clippers), shaved every 2-3 days. Hair was still fine after 6 weeks. No one was worried about my hair or face, it’s not a fashion show and as long as the rest of your daily personal hygiene and daily clothes washing is managed you will be fine. My...

How do you fix a stage miscalculation?

I had a simple spreadsheet for last year on my iPad mini, adjusted it as my plans and distances changed.

    Best U.S. $$$ Denominations

John. As others have said Euros us what you need. I did the full Frances route from St Jean in May/June 2022. €10 and €20 are the best mix. I also carried €50 and €100 notes, but found that many small places didn’t or wouldn’t have change for a €100 note. Some will also take credit cards. Some...

    Albergues with curtains

Not many other pilgrims will want “white noise” in a bunk room. In 38 days of walking this year I only stayed in 2 Albergues with curtains on the bunks.

    Camino hacks

I used the laundry hack in Albergues with no sink plugs. Passport - worth a try but some may want to feel the real thing!

    Pilgrims “on a mission….”

Might need a lubricant instead of a water/rust treatment. I spotted several hardware shops on my recent Frances from SJPP so finding some oil or spray lube locally shouldn’t be a problem.

    Apple Watch ¿Sí o No?

I have 4x3A charger and use the cable that came with the watch. I also have a 2 outlet 10k battery in case there isn’t a plug near to my bed at night.

Walking the Camino with a dog - Experiences?

At least 2 dogs on the first half of the SJPP to Santiago route currently. Both very well trained and road wise. Some local dogs don’t take too kindly to strange dogs. One is a Border collie cross. The other is a large shaggy Alsatian who is very well looked after by his young owner. He has...

    Apple Watch ¿Sí o No?

Got one just before starting. Just on halfway through now and I like the distance tracking feature, also prompts me to keep hydrated via the Waterful app.
