My husband and I were photographed by Javier the night before we left Roncesvalles at the beginning of March 2023, and he kept track of us as we progressed along the Frances (our second time). Two days out of Santiago we let him know of our arrival and he was patiently waiting for us at the...
Yes....! We repeatedly crossed paths with her too. Same nickname and same bafflement as she waffled on in French to us. Our Quebecois friend tried to avoid conversation with her as it could get a little strange.
Our personal favourite is Gijon for it's beautiful sweeping beach and everything it offers but as for water temperature I found all of Spain cold and the Mediterranean was the coldest of all funnily enough.
I reckon it's the anticipation that borders on desperate longing when the going gets tough/long/cold/tiring that makes having a cafe con leche soooo satisfying. Whether it comes to me luke warm or scalding it is savoured and appreciated like you wouldn't believe. My first confident Spanish...
After every Camino there's a longing to find the way back and explore a different path or different conditions. On the Camino I am content, I need no more to make me happy.
Just hoping to get some feedback about weather and walking conditions from those fortunate pilgrims currently making their way across the Frances. We are planning a late February departure from Roncesvalles and are familiar with the route. I always think it's better to rely on information I can...
Totally agree with considering the Camino Invierno. Lots of changes in elevation and magnificent scenery to go with it and a time frame that matches what you are looking for. We just completed it in November and loved it.
And dont forget to check possible flight routes instead of the obvious. We flew Sydney to Istanbul with time spent there and then on to Lisbon. Our daughter will fly over in a couple of days from Sydney to London via Hong Kong (a BA/Cathay co flight) and short transit time to fly in to Porto...
I only drink 2 coffees in the morning and if I miss out will get the rare headache mid afternoon, but for the real caffeine addicts that fear withdrawal symptom there’s caffeine strips that dissolve in the mouth available for middle distance & endurance runners that compete. Look for “Revvies”...
As I am the only coffee addict when we walk I always carry the Nescafe 3 in 1 sachets you can buy in a pack at any supermercado in Spain. Quick, small and the MOST important thing, LIGHT. Keeps me going until I can get a proper cafe con leche.
The municipal alburgue at Embalse de Acantera on the VdlP has the best design for their top bunks. They split level the room and you walk up the stairs to a generous upper level that joins the foot of the upper bunks. It was a really well designed alburgue and a pleasure to stay in for...
We planned our first Camino in 2017 to give our then 14 year old daughter the opportunity to practice by immersion as she was studying Spanish through Distance Education. Definitely the best way to inspire learning Spanish is to use it in day to day life. As we all enjoyed the experience so much...
I asked a local today if the rain was unusual for this time of year and he said it always rains a lot in winter. Glad I’m not riding a camel across the Sahara in this weather, it would be way too bizarre 🤪 Should have saved the money and gone back for a thermal bath and more good cheese, jamón...
We unknowingy followed the wrong arrows from out of the hilltop alburgue leaving Bilbao and loved the scenery until we finally realised we were not on the Norte but heading to Burgos. We then tracked across to Castro Urdiales, a very memorable but very long day. It was so peaceful and pretty...
When you say “goat gods wearing thongs” I assume you are using the Aussie term for our national footwear. I hope so because otherwise I have a very disturbing mental picture of the other 😝 😂
