I have been accused of racing for a bed because I walked from 6am until 1pm. I was afraid of the heat during the middle of the day. Last month it got really hot from 2pm until around 8pm. At my age, I took frequent rest stops and drank lots of water. Please be careful out there.
I just finished working in Ponferrada the first half of June. We did not provide meals so there was no cooking. Pilgrims left every morning between 6 and 8. From 8 until 10 we cleaned the bathrooms, kitchen, and courtyard and mopped the floors. We were free until around 1PM when we opened...
IMHO the basic premise that you need to have food with you is a false premise. A few times I carried some fruit and peanuts and once some crackers. I never had a problem finding something to eat. If there was no breakfast available at the albergue, I would find a great place for breakfast...
As I said, it’s your Camino and you should do it any way that you want to do it. My next Camino will be slower and longer than the last and I will concentrate more on the people and less on the mountains. Buen Camino
It is your Camino and the two of you should do it anyway you want to do it. I found that getting out of my comfort zone was very important to the overall experience that I had. Staying in hotels and having luggage would have made this extraordinary adventure into a common vacation to me. Just...
The coffee was very good. Ask for con leche grande. I usually got between 6 and 8 ounces. Once I got a glass of con leche about 4 inches in diameter and 5 inches tall. Usually the 2 ounce size cost one euro and the 6 ounce size was 1.25 euro.
My only plans were clothes, boots, rain gear, and prescription medicines. I did book SJPDP and Orisson, but after that it was “play it by ear”. 4 weeks later I found it was prudent to book rooms ahead for the last 100K. Buen Camino
My Camino taught me not to fear. I took reasonable precautions and didn’t worry any more. I walked in May and June without being bitten. Don’t let fear dominate your Camino. Be cautious, be safe, and enjoy the experience. I know people that have refused to walk because of fear of bedbugs. So...
I too have more sox than I need. I took 2 pair of Wright Socks and they were great. I bought 50 pounds of things that I might need and left 75% of it at home. When I got to Burgos, I mailed 5 pounds to myself at the PO in Santiago.
Your last line says it all "how delightful"
You cannot imagine the freedom that comes from putting on a backpack at 6AM and not knowing where you will eat breakfast, much less where you will sleep. Rest assured you will eat and you will sleep. When you get home you will spend as much time...
Hello, Fritzi. I could have written your original post. I feel the same way. The excitement and the doubt are in conflict in my head. I am 70 years old and this is my first Camino. I leave St Jean Pied de Port 18 May and have allowed as much as 6 weeks to finish. I keep telling myself that I...
