I haven’t read ALL the replies but I’m pretty sure nobody else had this worry: bras. I was obsessed with bras! I bought at least 5 different styles of bra before my Camino trying to find the perfect lightweight, quick dry, easy to take on/off, breathable bra. I did find a pretty good one. But no...
I just ordered seeds to plant this spring! I’ve been growing shishitos for a few years with great success. I’m going to grow both this year to compare.
If anyone else is interested in growing them, I ordered from The Incredible Seed Company in Canada. Johnny’s Seeds carry them in the States.
If you’ve got that stabbing pain in between your shoulder blades, put on your ear buds and listen to a good walking song. Two that shuffle delivered to me at exactly the right moment were: You really got me by the Kinks and Rihanna’s Please don’t stop the music. You will loosen up those muscles...
I felt so sorry for the locals! Of course we’re good for the local economy but I kept thinking “I would love to live here if it weren’t for the pilgrims.” I remember in particular in a very small town with only one restaurant. There was a big table of pilgrims from the albergue with a very loud...
Wow, that was not my experience at all. Is the food lousy on the Frances because on the Portuguese it was fabulous. I honestly can't remember a bad meal. I've been ranting ever since I got back about how amazing the quality of food was compared to North America. Our first night out from Porto...
I walked with a friend who lives in Madrid. She told me they don't flush toilet paper in Spain and she assumed Portugal. She said the garbage can beside the toilet is for your toilet paper. It is a REALLY hard habit to break. I probably only did it about 40% of the time!
Of course but it is the follow up question: But where are you really from? or But where are your parents from? or But where were you born? that can be insulting because you are essentially saying that for some reason (usually skin colour or accent) you don't think they are really "from" their...
Yes, I believe Franco required all restaurants to offer a menu del dia at a specific price that workers could afford. It’s not required anymore but still very popular. My friend who lives in Madrid often uses it as a way to try out fancy restaurants. So it is in the restaurant’s best interest to...
I agree with everything you've written. I am going to TRY a stationary bike at the community centre. I think I might get into it if I'm listening to good music. I did some winter hiking last winter outside the city at my in laws. If snow conditions are right - crust is thick enough to support me...
I’ve only walked the Portuguese Caminos and I didn’t find the setts worse than any other paved surface. But it sounds like there are more paved surfaces on the CPs?
Canadian here and I agree 100%. I only understood this on my third trip to France. I was on a bus in Paris going from the Gare du Nord to my AirBnB. Each time the bus stopped and someone (male/female or young/old) got on, someone would stand up and give them their seat with a sweeping gesture...
The Best is in the eye of the beholder. No matter what route we take, how much we carry and where we sleep, we will all have our very own best and worst bits.
I’m walking my first Camino and am very likely over planning. I hope to do another some day all footloose and fancy free like the rest of...
Re-energizing walk last weekend in back woods of Eastern Ontario. My Camino training was starting to feel like a chore. It’s hard to get excited about walking the same old city routes and I was even sick of pod casts. This day spent tramping the woods and ponds with my favourite walking...
I've only had good experiences with Portuguese feijoada. No tripe or other guts. The ones I've had were similar to cassoulet - beans with pork and chorizo. The beans gets soft and creamy. So delicious!
In some of Toronto's old Chinatown restaurants, after the bars closed, we used to order "cold tea" with a knowing look and get a teapot full of cheap rye.
