    Cancelling Camino - Soliciting Advice

Excuse me, but are you walking with or without poles? Many people find them indispensable, including me...

Sharing a menu del dia/ becoming a trend/ Santiago de Compostela

I was told there's a new law against food waste - if there's a lot of food left, the restaurant is supposed to offer you the opportunity to take the leftovers with you. If it's something that doesn't require refrigeration, I usually say yes, and if they don't offer, I ask if I can take the rest...

    Locals Only

Walking the lesser known Caminos, I have often encountered effusively happy greetings from some locals - probably because they don't see so many pilgrims. I smile and thank them. On Caminos that see a lot of people, or cities with a lot of tourists, I don't expect anyone to wish me a good...

Menu del dia - options to customize?

Tip for people who are vegan/vegetarian/tired of meat with everything: if you have made friends with the waiter and you're in a fairly large restaurant, asking nicely of the kitchen could make you a "parrillada de verduras" (grilled vegetables) has several times secured me a very nice meal - but...

Looking For a 5-7 Day Easy and Relatively Flat Camino

Vía Augusta - (Cádiz - Sevilla) is wonderfully flat and full of bird reservations. A part of the Mozarabe, from Córdoba to Granada, is also nice and flat.

    2023: hospitalero shortage

My fourth round of volunteering was great - I really like Grado.

    Hospitaleros needed for Winter 2024

Are those the six albergues that need volunteers?

    What’s better than walking a Camino ?

Twice on my own, twice with my husband, already discussing where we want to go next summer - yes, it's addictive. And fun.

    What surprised you the most?

That there are only two important things in the world: putting one foot in front of the other - and what's for lunch?

    2023: hospitalero shortage

There are places I stayed one night as a pilgrim where I would not want to spend two weeks as hospitalera. There are many, many places I'd love to serve, but not just anywhere. That's why I'd like a list. Next summer, we'd gladly offer two weeks between July 1st and August 15th, in albergue A...

    2023: hospitalero shortage

I have done three shifts of voluntering for FICS, my fourth is coming up in July. But I don't think I'm nice enough to let HosVol send me anywhere they want...

Can someone direct me to a list of the HosVol albergues?

A day (or evening) in the life of an albergue

A note about morning showers: I have found that starting my walk with slightly moist feet, even from a morning shower, make my feet more susceptible to blisters. So I only do morning showers if I am NOT walking.

    2023: hospitalero shortage

If someone is reading this and feels uncertain about volunteering - please feel free to send me a message for a private discussion. I'm doing my fourth round in July along with my husband (his second).

    Unattended Pack

When I've had to leave my backpack outside a bar right next to the road and felt too many eyes on it from passing cars, I have used the waist strap to fasten the backpack to the nearest table. Most of the time, I haven't felt the need to do so.

    Missed opportunities

I tend to do a lot of planning ahead (that's what lunch breaks are for!), but when we actually start walking, we miss at least a third of the things we were planning to see because something else happened, we went into another church, we spent too long at lunch, the place was closed without...

Strangest food & drink on the Camino

For me, the difficult thing has been that many things change names in different parts of Spain. I've come across at least three different names for roast piglet, and four names for sausages that looked and tasted the same. So I have learned to ask, every time there's something on a menu that I...

Tradition…. When to start wearing your scallop shell?

I've never worn a shell - but now I have cloth badges from Camigas, this website and the Norwegian pilgrim symbol on my backpack.

Any gyms on CF with day passes?

Both the albergues I have volunteered at had plenty of yoga mats that had been left by pilgrims who didn't want to carry them. I'm sure yoga practitioners will find plenty of mats without carrying them from home...

    Walking with a child

Camino Francés is really where my son learned to speak English - a lot of people wanted to walk with him. We walked pretty slowly, so it was easy for most people to leave us behind. When they didn't, we knew it was because they liked talking to him. A few people also said they missed their kids...
