I keep a blog - have done for a while - which features Caminos and other walking stuff.
There are several reasons why I started it. Sure, I wanted to have something to look back on in my dotage, and something that my parents could look at now they are in theirs and can't travel any more.
But...
We, too, have watched it numerous times.
As has been mentioned, it is a movie, not a documentary, so has taken certain liberties. Besides inconsistencies in the order of locations, it is a romanticised version and cuts out a lot of the less pretty bits that pilgrims encounter.
However, as an...
That may or may not be true - but it's something we shouldn't assume. I'm sure we have all met iPhone-and-tablet toting pilgrims toddling between albergues with their Osprey packs and modern, light weight gear. But that in itself doesn't necessarily tell the full story - not all albergue users...
Hmmm .... I see something of a contradiction here.
On the one hand, you say you love the egalitarianism of the Camino - that it brings people together in an equal way, regardless of who they are, what they do, where they are from, etc, and that those matters are pretty much immaterial - which...
A Saga trip, eh?
Interesting, but not for me. ;)
However, some may like what is on offer - if they do, great; if not, it will disappear from the schedules! And, if it continues, it may well help to support the areas in question.
But it sounds to me more like a trip through northern Spain -...
Good points, all.
It does seem that the issues covered in the manifesto can be split into three: increased commercialism, protecting and improving the infrastucture, and the nature of the credencial.
As far as commercialism is concerned, well it stikes me that EVERYTHING is becoming more...
Hmmm ..... many points of view on offer here, and - like others have said - some seem agreeable, and some not.
But in the interests of keeping the discussion in a practical place, I'll resist the temptaion to discuss specific issues from specific contributors other than to say it is IMHO up to...
Sounds interesting, and hopefully will be released in the UK in the not-too-distant future. If not, the book also sounds good and, if the usual situation prevails, it will probably be better than the film!
Either way, worth investigation it seems. :)
As a relative newcomer to this forum and a sporadic user, I completely agree with nomadpeah - everyone is so friendly, understanding and patient, which is a real boon to those of us who might not be so experienced or informed. :)
We are completing the Camino Frances over 3 years, 1 week first time, then 2 spells of 2 weeks. We didn't have any problem stopping and starting: true, we left our Camino family behind in Leon this year, but they are not forgotten, and we look forward to making more new friends next year.
As...
I think this is the crux, really. Nothing wrong in taking a camera or devices with you, but knowing when and where to use them is the key. One shouldn't be a slave to it, and it should never be used in a rude, inappropriate, voyeuristic or disrespectful way. Keep that in mind and you shouldn't...
Interesting thoughts, and a subject with as many further questions as answers, no doubt!
My two penn'orth: I DO think there is an increasing proportion of the world population who are content (or simply brainwashed) into viewing the world through the filter of modern technology. That applies...
