When I walk I can’t do anything else like listen to music or books etc. So like Kathy I had to learn to do this for hrs in the Camino.
One book I always recommend to my patients is Walking the Blues Away by Thom Hartmann... he found that walking and thinking help the two sides of the brain to...
Born and raised in Ogdensburg NY on border of Canada... 30 yrs of my adult life Boston MA... 5 yrs ago returned home to Ogdensburg 50 mi from OTTAWA Canada...
Hi all,
I can only speak for me. To me when I walked it was a pilgrimage in honor of my mom and my friend both who died from cancer. I made a commitment to walk to them so they would know in a way I would be ok. I’ve had a stroke and my right side is limited. I carried my pack every day but...
All of them are wonderful options. For me making memories with your daughters... new country time with your girls and helping others. Seems like a winning trifecta to me!😉
Hi all,
sounds like they’re trying to make a positive change. Last October when I got my Compostela I waited in line for almost 3 hrs. Difficult for me as I’ve had a stroke and my side was really struggling. But I had a nice conversation with several pilgrims. To me this was part of the process...
I understand why you would want Pip to join you. I walked the CF last year my Springer was 9 mos old. Could she have done it with me? Absolutely! She has energy to burn. Did I take her? No. I had a friend stay at the house for the six weeks I was gone. You sound like very responsible owners...
I was 7 my sister 19 and quite the flower child! We grew up in NYS border of Canada. Of course she hitchhiked to Woodstock! I remember mom worrying and dad being angry about the hippies having “kidnapped” his daughter! She returned unscathed... hung a huge green velvet pic of Jimmie Hendrix on...
I just finished my first Camino Frances in October. It seems that Spain does a lot of recycling and takes it very seriously. Along the way several places handed out these bright yellow bags... I used mine to put my shoes in. But many used them for shopping or trash. We were taught to clean up...
Hi Robo,
This is something I've struggled with all my life! I completed my first Camino a few weeks ago. I've had a stroke so I went very slowly. Not one blister which I chalk up to wearing Teva closed sandals with my merino wool socks! I used walking poles and my back pack was around 15lbs. I...
Dear Dave,
So nice you have returned. Congratulations in walking the Camino for your son. I'm sure this was a sacred task you completed that can't be put into words but your tears said it all.
I hadn't been on the forum since I got back from my 1st Camino... I was surprised and sad when I...
I had my first of many “peak” or spiritual experiences when I was 5. I was standing on a hill over looking a river. I looked up into the night sky and felt very small and insignificant... a breath later I felt a part of all life and was filled with complete awe and joy. This experience has...
Looks so beautiful! I live on the St Lawrence river 45 min from the Adirondacks the best of 2 worlds. My walking takes me usually along the river until Spring when I can go to the ADK and enjoy those little hills. Thank you for sharing your place in the world so many places so little time!
Peter,
Thank you for the reminder. Time to pay for a few more months. Now that my mom has passed actually walking the Camino is a real possibility instead of when...I have valued the suggestions, witty banter, lovely stories shared here. Time to pay up!
This is also another reason why drinking a little wine/beer is a good choice 1. it’s the custom of the country and 2. It’s cheaper than other options. I’m sure I will adapt regardless. I will have to find something with electrolytes though maybe carry some powder additives for H2O?!
Thank you so much all who replied! I’ve made notes. I love apple cider and have had sangria not sure it’s quite the same as in U.S. I will try the beer and lemon as well. I like to eat and drink what each country offers but I’ve had a stroke and take meds so a little is alot! Buen Camino
In preparation for my Camino I’ve been thinking about important things... what to drink. I do not drink alcohol much never really liked the taste. So I’m asking for some help from you experts in the Camino and alcohol a few suggestions of wine on sweet side and beer w/o the nasty aftertaste...
Dear Mick,
Thank you for your service! Thank you for helping the 41 to the end! Now it's time to care for yourself. You've carried a great load for others and yourself. Let your body and mind heal and know that you did good, probably much more than most of us could've done with such injuries...
In general yrs one should "dress" for Mass. However, the Camino is a pilgrimage requiring a 500 mile trek as an act of faith ( if Catholic). In this case you dress in the clothes you have and act respectfully in Mass. It is more important that people are present than be worried what they are...
We all watched the movie together. I wanted both to know I had a plan so they wouldn't worry about me. I'm planning two months away with an open ticket. 6 weeks to walk on the slow side and a little time in Paris. When people ask when I'm going or am I excited I have mixed feelings! Like you...
