Beautiful - both the image and the sentiment. I have not walked Camino in winter, but having done winter trips in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I can understand the appeal - solitude (which some seek rather than fear), and a whole different kind of beauty.
I'm undecided too. My first thought was the Via Francigena as a 3 year project, but I'd like to walk with a pilgrim I met on the Frances this past spring and she is worried about the lack of signage and the loneliness of the VF in France. I don't worry about such things - others have done it...
I was just (sort of) being a wise guy about La Tienda. Its a lovely site and I expect the products are yummy. I did indeed see a $298 ham, and that price would only take me to Iceland, and only if there were a super fare deal;). I say if the budget can bear it, why not have a Christmas treat...
Wow, I just checked out "La tienda". For the cost of some of those hams I can buy a round trip ticket from Montreal to Spain and have plenty left over for a nice hotel, some cheese, and wine to go with my jamon.:)
We humans are so interesting. I have heard people complain about the taxi pilgrims, but also have heard complaints about the "hordes" starting in Sarria "only to get their Compostella" and "not really being "real pilgrims" because they have not experienced "enough" of the Camino. I understand...
I don't work for the American Automobile Association, but maybe the US Embassy employee who wrote up that blurb has a relative with a financial interest in that organization:). (AAA issues the IDP in the states.) Just thought I'd pass along the info I read (and actually believed)...
The International Driving Permit is not adequate in itself and the state issued photo ID driver's license is required. I wonder if having the IDP would only be an issue if you had to produce your license to some official or police in the case of an auto accident. Also, I was mistaken in...
A bit off topic but related to the above post: I will be walking the Madrid Camino, training to Santiago to spend a few days (during Fiesta de la Acunsión:)), then renting a car for a weeklong road trip. If you plan on driving in Spain, according to the US Dept. of State website, US citizens...
I can't wait to not touch the fruit in Spain! On a month long trip to Italy and France in 2014, I ate fresh fruit, mostly peaches, every day. I have not found an edible peach in my NH USA supermarkets in years. I won't touch the fruit, but I may not be able to help drooling a bit!
