What was the thing you were most happy to lose on the Camino?

On my way to Rome, one day before I started to make my way up the Alpes, I lost my guide book. I had about 1000 km to go. But I learned to just follow the Via Francigena signs and I was always able to find a place to sleep. It was liberating to not rely on a book.

Where did you walk ( locally ) in 2020?

Having to work from home next week, I thought it would be nice to go for a nice walk along an allmost empty beach, close to Rotterdam harbour.

    Multi-timers: Compare your Camino experiences

First pilgrimage at 26 years old, Netherlands to Rome, about 2000 km. I found it was loneley but still think it was the best one, because it was the most intence experiences of my life. Second one was the Jacobsweg when I was 30/31 (birthday on the camino, yay!). Starting in Vienna, had to stop...

    What was your meltdown point?

The day after entering Switzerland on the Via Francigena I walked in thick mist for hours. I could only see about 5 metres and only heard cow bells. I don't know what happend, but I started crying like a 5 year old and could not stop myself. The weather didn't help also, it had been raining non...

Would you pay extra for a lower bed?

Am I the only one who acually prefers the top bunk? I like to have a view, to be able to sit up without bumping my head all the time (I am kind of stupid with the remembering thing sometimes) and to not have anyone above me. It's a lot lighter too up there. I would pay more for the top...

    What is a Pilgrim/What is a Pilgrimage?

What you describe here is one of the main reasons I walked my first pilgrimage to Rome and not Santiago. I think it is best to try and focus on your own pilgrimage and to try to be the pilgrim you need to be for yourself. It took me 800 km to think of myself as a pilgrim when I had another...

    Next Camino blanket is underway

The colors are perfect! I think you and I share the same hobby, but I never thought of doing camino-inspired projects. Very cool!

What time of year do people do their planning?

About an hour before my train left, that was my preparation time for my last camino.. For the other longer ones, about 3 or 4 months before. It never works out the way you planned it so I just don't see the point.

    Printing EasyJet boarding pass

Have you checked in? :) And I usually print my boarding pass at the airport, because I don't have a printer.. And another option: allmost all flying companies have an App you can install on your phone and you can show the ticket on that app. Then you don't have to print.

All you own is on your back

I did buy a Ukulele, but on a training hike I kept being scared that it would break or that it would rip through my poncho when it rained. My 22liter pack is pretty full also, but the size is awesome!

All you own is on your back

I have been living out of my backpack for most of the last 6 months and it is so easy. Saves time too: you never have to think about what to wear (the set that is not wet from doing laundry) and everything is within reach! But I do miss my guitar, too heavy to bring along.. I just switched from...

How Far Have You Walked in Total on Caminos?

Just changed to over 2000 km :) 2000 km Netherland to Rome and last week I finisged 1250 km of trail to Santiago. First Vienna to Innsbruck (about 450 km walked), then 3 days of rest and and travel time to St. Jean to walk the last 800 to Santiago. About to start a new walk: 500 km through the...

    Weather!!!

I have walked through a very bad thunderstorm a couple of days ago and you know what? The Camino provided with a nice and comfotable bar to wait it out :) Yes, we had to walk through the pouring rain for a couple of hours and I was scared. But I wasn't alone and that makes it already a lot...
