If you don't mind about ending up in Santiago, you could walk from Le Puy which is mainly on earth paths through beautiful countryside away from roads, (although there are some minor ones) and finish in one of the beautiful cathedral cities of Moissac, Cahors, Rocamadour...just a thought!
When I walked the chemins de Puy and Arles most of the Gites and Chambres d'hôtes use a 'natural' spray called Clako which you can get there for about 12 euros. Many insist that you are 'protected' in this way before they let you stay,
Anybody have any idea how effective it is? Haven't seen it...

Portugues could be very wet, it was in early march. There was also a lot more Tarmac than I expected, but about half the days were pleasant walking and scenery. I did Oporto to Santiago. Having said that, I loved the places and people, very welcoming.
