People may really be overreacting to this bedbug situation. I have an extreme reaction to bee stings (they send be to a hospital emergency room) and even the simplest of mosquito bites cause that area of my body to swell and itch, far more so than anyone else I know. Accordingly I was very...
Didn't frame my Compostela. May get around to doing so, however don't know where I'd display it.
Aside from the Compostela, I took the same scallop shell on three Caminos, and will on perhaps others in the future. It may seem strange, but it is my wish to be buried with that shell.
Grease,
Sounds like your Camino has already begun. You are an outsider no more! Bet you will love it, but a word of caution: It can become both an addiction and an obsession.
Buen Camino!
It was good of you Ivar to explain your point of view. Wow after all of this one has to wonder if you ever question yourself as to whether it is worthwhile to keep this forum going.
Today is America's Thankgiving Day. A day that we recognize those things that others do to make this world a...
Tracy,
I was in the process of responding to this post but got distracted. Essentially the response was to suggest that maybe you were taking things too personally. After all the operation of this forum itself takes a commitment of money and time. At some level a decision between whether to...
Why the harsh criticism?
Like so many other people along the Camino I like to believe that I am of generous spirit and willing to help someone in need. While fortunate in life, I am not of unlimited financial means. Accordingly, choices need to be made in my charitable giving. Quite simply...
I like this all encompassing forum. It is divided into topics such that if one's interests are about factual matters like equipment, logistics, practical advice, etc, these are well represented and catagorized. If that is all a reader cares about that is all the reader needs to follow. What a...
When passing through airport screening on the outbound flight enroute to Spain, the stone in my bag got scrutinized by security personnel. One official showed it to another who began a short discussion. The official asked "what is this?" I said, "It is a stone. That may seem odd to you but I...
The Cruz de Ferro (Iron Cross) is located at the highest point along the Frances Route just short of 30 km past the town of Astorga. It is one of the more significant Camino landmarks.
If my understanding as well that it is customary to bring a stone from your home to lay at the cross...
It's not this question. Stick around for a while and you will see the passion of this forum throughout. As is true of many special interest web forums, the people who troll them are not representative of the population at large.
Many who have walked the Camino experienced something truly...
I don't want to turn any of this into a personal thing but will come to Fred's defense here. He just signed up as a Forum member and entered the first two posts. I don't think he was rude or out of hand waiting for a respose but rather did not know what to expect.
In all reality, finding...
Agree that it is a good idea to keep backpack weight to a minimum. That's really not my point. Rather it is that scattered throughout various threads are comments that seem to sometimes obsess upon some magical 10% of body weight number and suggest others do the same. There is no reason for...
Someone somewhere arbitrarily came up with this guideline that one should strive to restrict the weight of their backpack to 10% of body weight. This gets passed around over and over again and seems now to have become a golden rule. Where does it come from?
Obviously it helps to limit...
What an inspiration!
I once came upon a Frenchman along the Camino who likewise was in his 80s. He wouldn't say precisely how old, said he stopped counting after hitting 80. In fact he could have been in his 90s for all I knew.
I walk at a fairly brisk pace ... couldn't keep up with him!
To reiterate what the consensus is saying here, you have absolutely nothing to fear. The Camino from SJPP to Roncensvalles may have relatively steep inclines but there are no drop offs whatsoever to be concerned about. The walking trails are very, very wide. It is impossible to go over the edge...
Thanks to those who devote so much feedback to this forum. You make this the great resource that it is. And now Falcon, as you approach your 3,000th comment, we await something profound to mark the occasion. Your advice and comments are spot on (well usually anyway). The pressure is on!
