    Bourbon and cigars

Just to add my two cents. You will find that any whisky or scotch are much more expensive than the wine. If that is not an issue for you I saw whisky offered in every bar I can remember. It won't be a large selection, but they will have something. I like my bourbon as well, but while in...

How often do you take a break?

I tended to take a break about every two hours for some coffee when walking during the day. I also planned to take a day off from walking one day a week. Of course once I started walking this plan was adjusted relative to where I was and certain places I just wanted to spend an extra day in.

What's with the big bulls on the hills?

There is yet another bull on the highway between Seville and Cordoba.

Nicknaming the People You Walk With

When I walked it seemed where you were from became your nickname. I was called Seattle, because I am from near there. I tried to give myself a nickname but it did not stick. My pack was way too heavy and then I saw the Toro Loco bull in Pamplona. I thought Toro Loco was an appropriate...

    Cats on the Camino

I took many photos of cats on my last Camino (Portuguese). These kittens were in Tomar.

My pilgrimage in a word: extraordinary! Yours?

My one word would definitely be 'Transformative'. The Camino changed me, for the better. I even caught the moment it all hit home on video at Cruz de Ferro. One minute I was just happily walking along the trail, the next I could not stop crying for hours. Happily I can honestly say that that...

    My pet-peeve: Selfies

I used the videos while walking on my treadmill training for the Camino. As this thread started, the videos of endless selfies with little to nothing about the trail itself were really boring, but probably not for the folks who made them.

    My pet-peeve: Selfies

I made a series of 12 videos that captured my first Camino (the CF) back in 2015. They are all available on YouTube when you do a search for 'Steve McGourty Camino'. The Camino videos are the ones whose name starts with 'Chapter#'. My wife, who did not walk with me, said they made her feel...

    After the Camino

After my first Camino I went to Finisterra and Muxia for a few days each. I used the time to think about what I had just done and went back into the journal I was keeping along the way and filled in details (introspective time). After my second Camino I went to Seville, Spain (tourist time).

    Thank You Everyone!

After my first Camino (CF) I was convinced that my long distance walking days were over. Within two months I was starting to plan my next walk. As you have experienced, the Camino and the people you meet get in your blood/mind. It is the best kind of addiction.

On the Camino, on this date in October

The Spanish seem to like that babies head. There is one outside the train station in Madrid as well.

“The worst footprint of the pilgrims”

If you are referring to this photo it was taken in Oct of 2015.

“The worst footprint of the pilgrims”

I have read that periodically the Spanish government "cleans-up" the shrine at Cruz de Ferro. They remove rocks and the trinkets folks have left behind. I have no idea how often this happens. In the article on this they are said they store what is removed somewhere, but I am not sure where...

On the Camino, on this date in October

I had just started walking the Camino Portugues from Porto on Oct 2, 2019 and had arrived at Matosinhos. This is a photo of the sunset on the beach there. I believe the building is a concert hall.

On the Camino, on this date in October

The morning of Oct 2, 2015 I was just leaving Carrión de los Condes on the Camino Frances, beginning that long 17 km walk to Terradullos. It was a cool start to the day, but it was not raining. I remembered to look back every few minutes to catch the sunrise. The trail was very populated. I...

    Leave no Trace?

I too am OK with graphitti in the tunnels, some of it is quite nice, but not on trail markers or street signs or walls of folks homes or barns. I think there is a big difference between these. To me much graphitti is disrespectful both in its appearance and where it is placed. When I entered...

What I Learned from Walking Alone

Ah yes, one of my motivators to walk alone is that I take a lot of photos, A LOT. I took over 12000 between Porto and Santiago. I suspect no one is willing to put up with stopping every few minutes to wait for me to take a few photos (I know it drives my wife crazy when we vacation together)...

What I Learned from Walking Alone

We all have our motivators. What you mention though is exactly why I like walking alone.

What I Learned from Walking Alone

When I am walking on flat surfaces I tend to walk around 4km. I am 67.

What I Learned from Walking Alone

While out walking in my neighborhood the other day, I thought about the question: “What did you bring home from the Camino?” On that day I answered the question this way: I am much more comfortable being alone now. I walked the Camino Frances alone in Sep/Oct of 2015. My wife had no interest...
