    Route Napoleon closed in winter.

Take the advice of the people in the office at SJPP they want you to have a great starting experience, and Camino. Remember the goal is getting to Santiago safe and sound, not getting over hill via a specific route.

El Camino with my children, ages 9 and 14

My girlfriend and I have had an idea to take one grandchild at a time on the Camino. Are there albergues with private rooms?

I used an app that did show the places they listed (most of the allergies on the Camino Frnaces) and separate weather they had rooms, ensuite or shared bathrooms, price, and many were reservable on line with out a card to hold them, or had the phone number were you can talk with them...

    best earliest time to go

We walked this year starting on 01April2016. We had a wonderful experience, as did others we run into heavier traffic from Porto Marin / Sarria . We were fortunate weather wise: rainy cool spring this year, we had rain near us more than on us with only 8? plus days of rain. I heard grumbling...

Brierly Guide worst guidebook ever written?

Clearly the book didn't work for you. We used the same book and found it more accurate on the topographic parts than most other aids we had. We walked with an Australian couple who had downloaded a German version into her iPad. That seemed to be more accurate on all the dips and turns than most...

Post Camino can things ever be normal again?

We've been back for a little more than a month, we (Girlfriend and I) too are changed by our experience. People have asked us "what was the best part of your trip"? I don't answer that easily, but say you will have to go yourself. I have given a few people close to me a shell and told them...

Present State of Wayfinding - Valcarlos Route

I would advise to just train so you build a base. It seemed each time a significant hill or climb was ahead my fellow pilgrims and I would think well that is the last one thank goodness. Yet early on I found many towns are perched on tops of hills os your long walk was met by a final hill into...

Present State of Wayfinding - Valcarlos Route

I walked the volcarlos route on april 01 and 02 2016. The route was well marked, we walked mostly on pathways with some roadside walking. As others have posted the office will gladly help you. We had to use the roadway part way due to flooding of the pathway. The office in SJPP was very helpful...

    Traveling with Walking poles

If you want to be sure your poles get there check them. It is entirely up to the agent at the security checkpoints. Sometimes yes and sometimes not.

In Zubiri without a way to withdraw money?

Most Santander banks are or use the Telebanco system, and are user friendly to US banks. Just finished in Spain finding banks that are user friendly along the camino can be challenging at times. In your situation: SYates post could be the source of your problem? I think you maybe on a wrong...

Stage 1, Napoleon or via Valcarlos?

We took the advice of the office the day we left from SJPP, that day it was Valcarlos(April 01). There is a small albergue in Valcarlos and if full like it was the day we left we found a place at the end of town a woman rents out rooms to pilgrims has a stamp etc. our room was a very cute...

Walking the Pyrenees with pre teens all unfit.

I suggest the Valcarlos route. There are plenty of hills and up for you and you can stop in Valcarlos which not quite half way. It will split that day up better, it's a beautiful walk, and cuts some altitude off. The objective for me was to get to Sanitago safe and sound. My girlfriend and I...

First Camino complete -thank you Forum

Congrats on your Camino. My girlfriend and I finished our first too. Ditto on the things you mentioned. Most of all speaking Spanish. I took a short class before I left plus an online free course. It was helpful and as you mentioned the more you know the better it will enhance your experience...

    To the April fools,

We did go over Valcarlos route as the Orrison route was closed. It takes a couple of weeks to get into a good groove. The walk was challenging for us. I trained a lot and found the combination of walking with another person or other people, the terrain, weather, food, and lodging to take time to...

    To the April fools,

Sorry to get back so late. We've been traveling a bit in Spain. We were asked by the offivpce in SJPP to go Valcarlos, all of the early April fools agree there is plenty of hill there to hike. I would go that way again, it is a good walk. Deb and Rob

    To the April fools,

Just a note to all those who started the Camino France's in or near April 1-31. Just got back from Finestere a couple of days ago. Most all the folks that started on April 01 had a wonderful experience. It rained before us, after us and on us. Cool days, cool nights in no heat or low heat places...
