Just about to head into London to catch the Eurostar. Staying at Gite de la Port St Jaques and heading out first thing with a very red Lowe Alpine backpack. Hope to catch up with some of you as I crawl up the mountain.
Buen Camino,
Rob.
@t2andreo
Because I'm too lazy to check and I suspect others may be interested could you let me know if there are any specific qualifications for working in the pilgrim office, for example do you have to be a fluent Spanish speaker?
If you look at the jump in numbers from 2009 to 2010 - 145,000 going up to 273,000, almost a doubling, it's pretty terrifying to speculate what the jump from 327,000 may be, 600,000+?
However as the increase in pilgrim numbers in recent years has largely been amongst the secular community it is...
I walked in May 2015 and loved it. Beautiful cool sunrises and warm days, wind rippling through the wheat fields, absolutely fantastic. Didn't have a single day of rain though others haven't been so lucky at this time of year. Never booked ahead and despite being a group of four only once had to...
Well it's possible they just didn't like the look of me and introduced a temporary byelaw  This was in 2017. I can confirm that I am yet to have a bishopric bestowed upon me.
There's also the issue of security. Some albergues, the CSJ run albergue in Rabanal springs to mind, won't allow any non-resident to enter their albergue, even if you have friends staying there who will vouch for you.
Thanks for the inside information @josephmcclain , much appreciated!
Could you tell me at roughly what time the meal usually ends so I can get an idea of how much of it I would be missing?
Thanks,
Rob.
Has anyone got any experience of coming in on the 7.36pm train to SJPdP and then going for dinner at Beilari? I understand they start the meal at 7.30 and best case scenario I'd be arriving at 7.45. On previous caminos I've stayed at other places but everybody seems to love Beilari, however I'm...
Hi @Sho
Two years ago I stayed at Albergue Casa Peltre situated at the bottom of the steps on the Rua Arrabaldo. It was a lovely little albergue in an old house with a nice garden area to relax in. I'd certainly recommend it.
Buen camino,
Rob.
Hi @barryg
The critical question is what time do you think you'll arrive at Roncesvalles? If you're getting in at 2-2.30 or earlier I'd say you have no problem, if you're thinking it may be closer to 4 or later I'd be more concerned.
Hi @James2019
Congratulations on biting the bullet and taking on new things, even in late middle age!
Doing 18km a day can seem daunting but when you consider that even by mid october you still have 11 hours of daylight that means all you need to average is 1.5km/h! And if you do find...
I'm sorry, I have to disagree. Being stuck having to stay in accomodation you chose from a website days or even weeks ago then discovering there were better options if only you'd stepped just a little outside your comfort zone is losing as far as I'm concerned.
As for what his wife may or may...
Whatever takes my fancy. If I'm alone and not inspired by the surroundings I'll listen to podcasts/music/audiobooks.
One of the surpirse successes of my last Camino was an old car game we used to play called The Elephant Packed His Trunk (though I'm sure it goes under a dozen different names"...
If you do decide to wing it and assuming we're talking about St Jean I would head straight to the Pilgrim Office which closes at 8pm. They are very helpful and should be able to give you an idea of where you can get a bed.
