I would be cautious of walking the Madrid in July -- north of Segovia the terrain is very exposed with little shelter from the sun. There are two or three days of intermittant pine forests but those don't last once you hit the Meseta. The terrain between Madrid and Cercedilla on the south side...

I struggled with the dorms but then discovered that some of the private albergues that offered private rooms at reasonable prices. I still did some of the dorms out of necessity, and frankly they were a great way to meet people, but I found a balance and ended up satisfied.
