    Cost - Frances vs. Portuguese?

I walked CF in 2019 and CP (from Porto) 2023. I think the costs are about the same with the CF a bit lower. I think CF is a bit lower because there are more choices as far as food & lodging. Especially with the lodging - more of the less expensive albergues available.

First time at Beilari hostel - experiences and tips

I stayed there in summer 2019 - lovely place and Joseph the guy who runs it is great. My mom had an injury and he really took care of us. we missed the communal dinner because we had to seek medical attention for the injury, when we returned around 10pm he had hot soup, bread and a salad...

    Meals in Roncesvalles, worth it?

Dinner was ok. We did both dinner and breakfast due to convenience. Especially the dinner - we were exhausted when we arrived at Rouncesvalles - it was nice being able to just walk across a courtyard to where they served the meal and not have to worry about finding a place to eat.

Roncesvalles Reservation - with or without dinner and/or breakfast?

In summer 2019 we did the dinner and breakfast option. Dinner was in the next building at a restaurant - it was an ok dinner - veggie soup or pasta, pork loin or trout, dessert, bread and wine - honestly we were so tired and hungry that we would have eaten anything put in front of us :)...

    Cash vs Credit or Debit

For my 2019 Camino I ordered $500 Euros in small bills from my bank here in the USA before going and plan on doing the same before my summer camino in Portugal. For me it is all about the convenience - one less thing to worry about once I arrive in Portugal.

    Pyrenees difficulty

It wasn't that it was difficult it was just long and the day we walked the weather wasn't great which made it seem more difficult to me. Very steep getting to Orisson - that was tough. Once you start descending into Roncevalles it got difficult again - we started down the forest path but...

    Staying extra days

You may be able to make into one of the winery towns early enough to not need to worry about staying an extra day. I did a wine tour in Logrono - checked into my albergue then walked to the winery and did an afternoon tour.

Walking time from SJPP to Borda

I am a slow walker, it took me about 4 hours to get to Orisson.

Peregrina bitten by snake near Lintzoain

We saw 1 snake - I think it was in Obanos. We were walking to the store and it was slithering up against a fence. No idea what kind of snake, no desire to get close to it - LOL.

Rest days on the Camino Frances?

I did "rest days" in Logrono and Burgos. Logrono - one day, relaxed and went on a wine tour. In Burgos I did 2 full days - relaxed, walked around the city, and did the Human Evolution museum. There were a couple of days along the way that became unintentional days of rest or very short...

Roncesvalles Reservation - with or without dinner and/or breakfast?

We did the dinner and breakfast in summer 2019 and if I walk again I would do the same. For me it was the convenience. We were dead tired upon arrival and in no shape to go looking for a meal - the meal wasn't something spectacular but it was convenient and easy after what my mom and I thought...

    Zubiri albergue Suseia

It is a nice place to stay. Sign up for the evening meal - it was a 4-5 course wonderful meal and the people at the table ended up being great company.

Have you encountered accidents on the Camino?

My mom fell in SJpdP the night before we were supposed to start walking -slipped down the stairs in the Albergue. Got to experience an ambulance ride thru the French countryside & a French hospital - nobody spoke English and we didn't speak French - fun times :) She had a laceration to her...

    Bunk beds

No fear of falling off bunk - I have never rolled out of bed while sleeping at home. I would have more anxiety with climbing up/down from top bunk especially in middle of night if needing bathroom.

What is the most intimidating aspect of walking the Camino Frances on your own?

2 things for me...Getting to my starting point - never have used public transportation in the USA - so the thought of navigating trains & buses makes me anxious. Close second thing is the actual long walking days, day after day - lots of thoughts run thru my head - am I going to be able to do it?

    Can anyone relate!

Haha.....I am the same way. I can always find something I "need" at REI.

Can't get a response from Refuge Orisson, what to do?

I emailed my request on November 15th for June date and heard from them the last week in November that my reservation was accepted, email stated they would send me an invoice to pay thru Paypal - I just assumed I would get an email requesting payment and never did. I just happened to log into...

Bucket List - What we must plan to not miss on the Way?

I would be interested also :) I plan on making the most out of my trip.

    Pre-booking

Has anyone had issues with booking.com - You make a reservation but when you show up it is missing? I am walking in June/July and have been researching a bit - want to prebook a few places just for ease of mind - first time traveling abroad, alone and thought it would be easier if I had a few...
