Ulysse:
Your info is exactly what I had been hoping to find. So interesting, and full of detail. Poor me, I wish I had known this before I went. This really adds yet another dimension to the Camino.
Many thanks,
K.
On several stretches of the Camino Frances one walks on an original roman road, most of it perfectly preserved and functional.
Looks like that formed the early 'backbone' of the Camino for a long time through the history.
Which roman 'Via' was that, by name, and where to find more...
I of course too agree fully with Trudy and Liv, thank you both very much for acknowledging and further emphasising the problem, cleanliness certainly begins with us pilgrims first, and there cannot be any excuse for littering anywhere anytime, and least of all impossible places on the Camino...
Camino revisited
True, but only partly.
The other truth is that there are many litterbins along the Camino that are never emptied, they spill their contents all over the place.
This time of the year, with the vegetation somewhat receded, the sight is absolutely revolting, trash left, right...
Be happy, Behappy! :D
At least, and most importantly, you'll be in numerable and -as usual- good company.
Last year, on October 2, still some 60 had started out from SJPdP, some more joined from Roncevalles onwards, and so on. The numbers go down in October, but they never drop off sharply...
Hi Jonny:
Yes it IS worth all that.
We also started in Logrono on our first Camino because we were uncertain about our capabilities.
But next time we started in SJPdP, and are thankful we did. It is not to be missed.

Karms:
Be not overly worried, or even deterred. I was walking fine after a spine operation, but then I kept my backpack weight down to 8 kgs max.
Knees may be a different matter. There are many steep downhill stretches in the Pyrenees stretch and they really stress the knees. Also the effects...
We started from St. Jean PdP on October 3. Down there it was lovely mild and sunny. Very different up on the pass, shivering cold and windy.
Then came several warm and dry days with bright sunshine. Around mid-October around Burgos it was pouring with rain, and cold. Further on just a few days...
Ger. :
Every major refugio on the spanish side this year had a public Internet facility, plus there were other public ones along the way as well.
Costs were EURO 1.00 for between 16 to 23 minutes usage.
Happy surfing!
Claus
Kanga:
Your message and recommendation reaches us after the fact, we left SJPdP on October 3, around noontime.
And stayed at Orisson, which was just perfect. Clean, friendly and excellent food, dinner and breakfast.
It so happened we were and formed a very nice group up there in the evening...
We were truly shocked: So much trash lying around the Camino today! When we went last, 2002, it was much different. Plastic bottles, crisps bags, complete waste bags, you name it. And the ubiquitous white tissue paper lying under trees and bushes all along the way, ARRGGHHH!
One guy some way...
Ger:
Hi or lo is important, sure, for the protection of your ankles, but there is something even more important than that, the bones inside your feet.
More important than 'hi or lo' is the soles of your shoes, they should be very RIGID, and give your underfoot cavity good support.
The...
George:
This 'aguardiente' seems to be useful stuff. Maybe I should also take a drop inside myself, just to make sure against the 'tourista'.
-Useful info, very. IŽll remember that for sure.

Chris:
We had it quite hot in early October, so September can be expected to be even hotter, generally. Though, there can be wet and somewhat chilly days sprinkled in too, depending on, well, the weather and where you are. Again, a raincape will serve you excellent in those conditions, better...
From our own experience, no warm rainjacket, Goretex or other, fits the bill at all.
Usually, if it rains it pours, and for hours. Then a rainjacket is poor protection, firstly because it is not long enough and because it will not protect your rucksack. Besides, in summer also in pouring rain...
Matt:
Very helpful, thank you.
We will stay the night in Bayonne and look around there a bit. Then we will take the first or the second train to SJPdP, which will bring us there not before 10.05h. Then we will need to get our pilgrim passports stamped and get some vittles before we can make...
Peter and Silly:
Much obliged for your info.
No. we cannot go through Irun, if we did we could not be in SJPdP in time to get even as far as Huntto.
Many thanks,
Kerry
Peter:
That was quick, and valuable. Many thanks.
If I may ask another question?: We would be planning to go to Bayonne by bus, and then by train on to SJPdP. Only, the usual ALSA bus doesnŽt operate on the day of our arrival in Bilbao in October. As an alternative they quoted us Euro...
Hi:
We definitely want to start in St Jean PdP but are uncertain if we will be fit enough to do the first stage from St Jean PdP to Roncesvalles in one go.
Is there any option to stay overnight somewhere between the two places?
Or, what could we do if we are up there somewhere and realise we...
