For those planning the Camino for Mid-September to Mid-October there will likely be accommodation challenges too. Great to see SJPDP opening up the fire station in a pinch, but with an upward trend in pilgrim numbers it might suggest a more robust or enterprising solution is needed to manage...
How much "cash on-hand" was a good question to ask. If you budget for +/- $60 a day and carry no more than a weeks cash you will be in a good spot. I found that when I had $1000 or more in cash I was on guard day and night. Much better to have $300 - $400 on hand and draw more from an ATM...
It's an inconvenience, and probably one of many adverse conditions you will experience in the coming weeks. A few days on the Camino will help you manage that anxiety.

I stayed at Orrison Oct 6th 2016 (good stop!). It's not necessary to book in advance unless you have special needs / constraints. I might add that some private Alberges between the bigger towns do close in mid-October, meaning it may not be n option to stop where you anticipated. I...
Day 1 is as daunting as it looks. Unless you are an avid hiker and can manage 24km in one day, - (16km of it up hill), then staying at Orrison is advisable (8km).
