I don't believe I lost any weight. I also stayed away from the Pilgrims Menu and ate, as often as possible, with locals at local bars and restaurants. The flavors of Spain are wonderful and varied, I tried as many as possible :)
My wife and I (both mid-50's) are walkers/hikers but my wife is a "slow walker" and while we have crossed more than 1 country on foot, we found some of the longer days on the Camino to be a challenge. You can do 6 "effortlessly" now, but can you do 12+14+13+17+13... with a 12 to 16 pound...
I posted this in another thread but copied it below for you:
My wife an I took our 15 year old God daughter for part of the Camino. Wife & I walked from SJPP but our 21 year old daughter and 15yo God daughter met up with us in Barbarelo, a few miles west of Sarria. They met up with us in...
My wife an I took our 15 year old God daughter for part of the Camino. Wife & I walked from SJPP but our 21 year old daughter and 15yo God daughter met up with us in Barbarelo, a few miles west of Sarria. They met up with us in Mid-July of this year.
Your kids need to understand what is...
Not sure which members devalue short Caminos. I did the Frances this summer with my wife, we started in SJPP and met many along the way who started in Pamplona, Burgos, Leon and Sarria. They were impressed with where we started. I stopped all of them and told them about the older man I met...
My wife and I just returned from the CF. We are both 55.
We stopped in Orisson for a cup of coffee and to use the bathroom and then pressed on to go to Roncesvalles. Orisson is only a couple hours up the hills from SJPP. Seemed silly to stop mid-morning. We started the morning walking in...
I believe you benefited from the time of the year you walked.
While I retired and can walk any time of the year I wish to, my wife is a teacher. She and I both wanted to do the Camino together, consequently we had to do the trip during her vacation period. That said, there was a CONSTANT...
I disagree with you on my opinion being somewhat extreme. I felt they were accurate.
Further I believe I was polite. I was asked for more information. I provided it as best as I could and feel the information I provided is legitimate and, in no way, impolite. You may enjoy the 'quirkiness'...
I had the paperback version of the book.
Maps were excellent. Basic directions seemed accurate and reasonably understandable.
The translation was simply badly done. I took German language classes from 4th grade through my Sophomore year in college, honestly I wish I had gotten the book in its...
The problem is that it has relatively short hours of operation, closes at 7pm, doesn't open until 9am the next morning, and is close for 4 hours during mid-day.
For pilgrims who arrive later in the day this place will likely be closed when they get there, closed when they depart.
Honestly I...
The problem is finding a "China Bazaar" in the early stages of the Camino. If you start in SJPP you will easily find a power adapter in Pamplona but I didn't see any stores during the first couple of days selling those things. There were probably stores in SJPP selling them, its a nice size...
I agree.
While I think many parts of the "Yellow" book are better than Brierly's guide, I also found the translation so bad that the book was unusable.
I found the Michelin Guide and the Village to Village (Kindle edition) have much better maps, much better descriptions than the Brierly Guide.
The Compostela is awarded by the Catholic Church and many believe it is just a souvenir of the trip, others look at it as a religious document.
If you want don't want the certificate you don't have to go to get one. Its just that simple. I am unsure why so many people actually get them.
This...
As I stated I realize its my issue.
Probably going to Italy to hike all or part of the route from Florence to Rome.
Or maybe England along St Oswalds Way?
Might come back to Spain and finish the Via de la Plata route from Seville. We did a portion of that a few years ago. The route can...
Loved my Camino from SJPDP to Sarria.
Disliked the way it changed with the heavy crowds and noise after Sarria. Packs of teens from schools were singing or carrying music players. Loud talking adults. Tranquility lost to the herd.
Now I'll say the groups were polite, just loud.
At one...
I did post it on Facebook. Hovever the majority on FB seemed to criticize Brierly. It was referred to there (until the posts were deleted) as the book of lies.
And you clearly noted that hostile remarks were deleted. Those remarks were directed at the Brierly book. So the overall feeling on FB...
The distances and maps are wrong and misleading.
Not life threatening for a healthy person but still seriously wrong and could lead to people not refilling water bottles because they believe they are closer to a village than is true.
It's good you had no issues but that doesn't make the guide good
I'm also finding the V-to-V guide is far more accurate and useful than Brierly.
I have 3 guides, Brierly, the English translation of the German guide and Village to Village.
V-to-V seems to be the best. The German and the Michelin guides both are better, and have better maps (but they could...
