What would you change about the CF - if you could?

I’d love to go in the winter! Was it possible to find lodging that wasn’t too far apart? Say…..15 km? And were albergues well heated? I’m from Maine and prefer cold to heat. I usually do the Camino in March.

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

And I should add: no requirement would mean an increase in people doing day walks or driving and getting the certificate. What a nightmare!

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

Perhaps. But fewer people would consider 200 km an easy walk. So there would be fewer people walking it.

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

You in a “quiet car?” On the east coast, Amtrak trains have at least one car where you aren’t even permitted a conversation. Heaven!!

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

I tried to stay there in October 2022 because I remembered it as a wonderful, welcoming albergue. That late in the season I was the only pilgrim and was put up in the biggest room with no heat. After a brief attempt to take a nap and finding out the shower room was also too cold, I left (not...

Sending a bag or box from SJPdP to Ivar

Ivar provides a great service I hear! But so far I’ve found it also easy to 1. Leave my extra things at the hotel or hostel I’m going to stay at before and after my walk or 2. Sending extra stuff to my after walk hotel for pick up. That said, I have never finished in Santiago, so Ivar hasn’t...

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

In Pamplona, I saw a group of women driven right up to the city albergue, unload their monster suitcases and enter for accommodation. It's a cheap bed. And they get a stamp. I saw the same thing in a smaller village later on my walk. this time they were being picked up to be moved to the next...

What would you change about the CF - if you could?

I would love a few albergues designated as “silent” in the sleeping rooms. I get snoring, etc can’t be regulated lol, but loud talking late at night or early morning can. I imagine these rooms as contemplative snd catering to those who are seeking a spiritual journey. And I wish those on...

    Expected weather beginning March 27

I’ve walked in March twice. I’d say: expect the unexpected. I had driving rain and snow and sunny T-shirt days. Bring many thin layers and rain gear. I wore everything on cold, rainy days and carried next to nothing. Lol. You’ll be fine.

Backpacks only policy in Albergues: A common restriction?

I think the greater issue is that suitcases are heavy (mostly because those bringing them overpack) and are more difficult for the transport companies and albergues to deal with. It's not about judging someone for bringing one. There's no reason why any pilgrim can't pare down as far as they...

Backpacks only policy in Albergues: A common restriction?

I haven’t seen this answer: Take a backpack packed as if you were going to walk with it. Max at 15 lbs. Pare down to the essentials and no more. And a small daypack. Carry your bag in the airport and wherever else you need to for only those short distances. I understand you have...

Winter sleeping bag? 0C or colder?

Hint for winter albergues: they tend to keep the heat off during the day and turn it on at night. Around 10pm. If it gets turned on at all. That opposite what we do at home. Personally, I need the heat when I arrive and when I wake up. But I don’t need it at night when I’m cozied up in my...

Winter sleeping bag? 0C or colder?

I'd have to get back with you on exact weights of the Kohls throws. I don't have them with me. The down throw that I prefer (with a microfiber cover) for use with my silk bag weighs 26 oz. The slippery Kohls versions are about half that -- but I think you'd lose loft and warmth if you you used...

Winter sleeping bag? 0C or colder?

Kohls has a down throw that's $15 and two together are lighter and more versatile than my $300 down bag that weighs next to nothing. They are a bit slippery, though. For the Camino, where you are always sleeping indoors, I prefer to save the weight and bring the down throws. But we are all...

Winter sleeping bag? 0C or colder?

Check Wayfair or Kohl’s for inexpensive down comforters or throws. It need not be a pricy backpacking version. Just light. The money is better spent on a real silk liner. Surprisingly warm!!

Winter sleeping bag? 0C or colder?

I wasn't referring to an expensive down quilt. I have one I used for my Camino that is throw sized (I am only 5'2") and cost about $35. Along with a silk bag, it was plenty for March on the Camino even when the albergue wasn't heated. And it was very light. But, like you, I live in the far...

Winter sleeping bag? 0C or colder?

I highly recommend a down quilt instead of sleeping bag. Another alternative is one of the new sleeping bags that open almost flat to be used like a quilt. Why? 1. You may or may not be sleeping in a cold room. A down bag will be overkill when it's warm. Unless it can be zipped open...

    Heading to the Meseta

The alternate route out of Leon to Astorga avoids crowds, busy roads, and is lovely with some sweet albergues. I was the only one taking it, which surprised me. Everyone else was slogging down the busy road.

    Pyrenees difficulty

I am a 68 yo woman and in decent shape but no athlete! If you’ve done any hiking at all with hills, you will find most of the Camino more of a walk, rather than a real hike. I started the last time woefully out of shape and with no practice prep. That first day is long but can be broken up at...

    Meseta early March

March is my favorite time to do the Camino. Yes, there are plenty of people although coming out of Leon on the alternative path, I was the only pilgrim in my albergues. You’ll find many albergues open, but not always heated. Ask before you check in! Expect variable weather. Anything from snow...
