    "normal" daily routine

Hi, Your priority when you arrive at the albergue is to have a shower then wash your laundry and dry it before sunset (quite a challenge in October). Then up to you : chat, cerveza, visit of the surroundings, phone call to next accommodation, etc. and finally dinner when available.

    Bookings in larger cities

Hi, By the way, for information : I have been denied a pilgrim rebate in some occasions, after having booked through booking.com (because they take a chunk from the room rate for their service).

    Which side of the path

Hi, Good point, barnettstakeagiantstep. Overtaking vehicles are a danger, speeding on your side of the road, with a driver who may not have seen you. You cannot walk with your eyes looking at your back, but be specially careful when you happen to see or hear some slow/wide vehicle, such as...

    Which side of the path

Hi, Yes, Trecile, we have seen some of them when reaching Castrojeriz (maybe because the painted strip on the right side could have been an option?) :

Is Courtesy Still Alive on the Camino? A Pre-Bookers Rant and more...

Hi Lizlane, Another option is to have a first night in Hunto (we did). Yes, it's a bit lower than Orisson, but it cuts quite a chunk out of this big SJPDP-Roncesvalles stage. Here are the details about the gite : http://www.gites-de-france-64.com/ferme-ithurburia/

    Grenwich meridian

In modern (post-)industrial societies, choosing a legal time with Sun culmination around 1 pm, or even 2 pm, is supposed to be more pleasant for the majority of the population. While it dit not make sense in more rural eras. As far as Galicia and the Camino are concerned, it means that, on the...

    Grenwich meridian

My grandmother told me people were a bit confused in 1940, in France, with summer time/winter time/German time...

    Road walking

Elsewhere, you will have a separate pedestrian path, separated by some distance, a ditch, trees...: You will never walk on highways banks (would mean 15 mn life expectancy :() And, as you know, hard surfaces are not limited to paved roads and streets: cities sidewalks, concrete country paths...

    Road walking

Hi all, Yes, there is some walking on roads, close to traffic, on the Camino Frances: - main roads: the only one I remember is the N111 into Viana (except if modified since I was there). Some 2 kilometers. - secondary roads: several ones, for instance into Castrojeriz, as already mentioned...

    Graffiti...but with a message

In fact, the percentage of idiots in the pilgrim community must be the same as everywhere else. Every known mode of selection tends to give the same results in this area, as desappointing as it could be. Including pilgrims vs. non-pilgrims. The locals must have understood it for a while and...

    Graffiti...but with a message

Hi Michelle, I had no opportunity to see people writing graffiti and I don't know what I would have done. But I felt I had to deliver a "You cannot do that" message to a pilgrim(?) picking (i.e. stealing) grapes in a vineyard in Rioja : don't do that to the farmer. And beware of chemicals.

    Graffiti...but with a message

Michelle, Could the stamps on one's credencial, blogs, forum messages etc. be better (tidy, respectful of locals...) solutions for keeping a trace or sharing with others ?

    Graffiti...but with a message

Looked for a message on this one. Found none (apart from "My selfish self went here" :()

measuring weight carried - is FSO (full skin out) a useful concept?

Hi, Probably by ringing a bell if the weight of your pack is beyond 10%, and let you check whether some supposed essentials could be challenged ? Except for seasoned pilgrims who have already solved this question from previous experience...

    SJPP to Roncesvalles

Hi, You will see the food truck mentioned by Anemone in this video. Look from min 12:30 Not here all year round, of course. Three little gems for those fluent in French : Journalist : "Your sheep are really nice !" Vendor : "They belong to my neighbour. Mine are over there." J : "In any...

Not so bad, I concur with you. A neat area, a tidy tire plant (educated opinion, but no interest involved)...

    Camino Frances in October

Hi, Did it in 2014. The weather was quite manageable. Cool in the morning in the Meseta, gloves appreciated. Rainy in Galicia as anticipated. The days are shorter and Spain is located at the west of the Central Europe time zone : expect to start walking at abt. 8:00 am if you don't want to...
