    Generic long distance walking question

Hi, I am 65 and have done many long distance walks over the last 30 years. Its fair to say that my feet always start hurting after 10 miles regardless of my pack weight, ground conditions, boot types, socks and temperatures. After 15 miles they are pretty sore and that's when i usually give it...

    Money card woes

Why not get in touch with the USA embassy and ask for assistance? I know the UK will advance cash etc and sort out this sort of problem, they dont like it but......

    ATM's on Camino

Some of the Albergues only charge 5 Euros.....nobody is surely going to pay for that with a card are they? I travel bymyself mainly and typically carry 100 to 200 Euros....to be honest thats no more then I would carry here in the UK. Cash machines are everywhere and provided they have a host of...

    Why were we not informed??

I went to the one in Leon last year and had a good room, a really good breakfast and it was a beautiful building to boot. This year I went to the one in Tui this year (Portuguese/Spanish border) and I thought the room was so so, the building uninspiring and the breakfast not so great - in my...

    Am I too laid back?

I will be doing my 4th Camino this September. I fly in from the UK as well. Have only ever pre booked accommodation for the first night on all of these walk. Struggled once for accommodation about 2 days from Santiago on a Sunday night( but in the end stayed in a very nice small hotel a short...

    Raingear on Frances in September

I travel light (5kg pack)so on my September Camino I just used a cheap light weight coat, no trousers. I didn't have any problems with doing that.

    Leaving Leon

not all markers are yellow. Many are bronze shells set into pavement or on walls. You have to keep a sharp eye out for them because they could simply on the other side of the road/street. It's sensible to keep an eye out for fellow walkers and there is a steady stream of them all day long - but...

The Meseta -to walk or bus!

I walked it and would if I have time love to walk it again. It was beautiful with all the wild flowers and so lovely and empty - you can lose your self there. It's an easy walk as well :-)

    Seeking reasonable cost hotel Pamplona

Just me maybe - when walking and I got into the really big towns I used to book a hotel and stay for a couple of nights. I simply got a milky coffee in one of the local bars the day that I arrived and then looked for the best deals on (dare I say it) booking.com. Had some really good very...

A few questions about life on the Camino Frances

I used to like the crème caramels that had small seal on the base to aid extraction. I could just fit one of the foresaid into my mouth, pull the seal and you get a rush of crème caramel. It always made me smile - I guess everyone to there own. Great food on the Camino though and try to avoid...

How Much Water are People Carrying and Drinking?

Came upon a lovely mobile food stop halfway along the Meseta - one of the places I actually carried a can of coke (so that was a waste of time) - which sold food, tea and loads of cold drinks. As I remember their were lots of flowing streams along the way as well but they probably dry up in the...

That special accomodation in Santiago HELP!!

The first time in Santiago I stayed in the "Last Stamp" Albergue. Not to be recommended if you are old and need your sleep as pilgrims arriving back at all times celebrating. But OK to be honest. I then walked to FinesTerre and returned to Santiago again, again I stayed in the centre in a small...

How Much Water are People Carrying and Drinking?

Yep that's spot on. I have walked 2 Caminos in June and one in October. The weather in all three trips was about the same as a UK summer, maybe slightly hotter. I wouldn't walk in July and August in Spain as its just not fun as it can get to hot for me - tbh if its going to be a really hot day...

How Much Water are People Carrying and Drinking?

On three trips I only found it necessary to carry water on two days - rest of the time I used fountains or had milky coffee or a beer in café on the way. But everyone to there own. I do however carry some water purification tablets in my wallet just in case I need to take water from a stream or...

Best ways to travel to León ?

I went to Santiago airport (never went into the city tho') by plane and took a couple of buses to Leon for my first Camino. I managed it easily and it didn't take that long TBH (about 1/2 a day) - I don't speak any Spanish and it wasn't that difficult. Would give you details but that was 4 years...

    Why start in St. Jean?

I started in both Leon and Burgos before St Jean. But in my humble opinion I wish I had started from St Jean first as it was the easiest place to get to and the information bundle the pilgrims office gave out was first class - far better than any guide book. Also nice to meet so many fresh and...

    Best Rucksack

Depends on how much you carry. I travel light (both cost and weight) the first Camino rucksack cost less then £20 and was perfectly adequate - lasted many trips as well.
