Be aware that May 1st is a holiday and many Spanish walk for days/week. If you are leaving one of the common starting points (Roncesvalles, Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos, Leon) you may have trouble getting a bed. I have learned the hard way (as in a very long day and got the last bed.)
Looks like your weather forecast is for Roncevalles which can be very different than the pass. I’ve been in snow coming over the Napoleon with none in Roncevalles.
I have walked many times starting mid-April and I worked in SJPdP last year from late March until April 12th when I started walking. Easter was April 9th. Yes, I would say your assessment of the numbers is correct. While for 2023 SJPdP starts were not as much as pre-pandemic, April was higher. I...
There are very few that you can’t send a bag forward. These are mostly municipals, but usually the bag transport company will arrange to a nearby bar if possible. There is a movement to not allow suitcases, along with the 11 in Galicia, there are others that are joining this movement. It’s not...
When are you going? I always make reservations through to Pamplona. After Pamplona there are more accommodations options and you develop your own rhythm. If you are going in spring or fall I would definitely book. I worked in SJPdP in April and everyday we had many pilgrims wandering around...
It’s a beautiful time to walk. I’ve started mid-April five of my Caminos. The flowers are blooming and the fields of wheat are green. It does seem like it’s been discovered and last year April starts from SJPdP exploded. So be sure to make reservations through Pamplona and then you get a feel...
I’ve done both and actually prefer the route to the right as you will have a view looking down at the Monastary. If you go down through the forest you do not get this view. I would not actually call this a detour, it is more of a route option. They have been recommending this for years. I didn’t...
Honestly, it’s hard to say what it will be like. I have started a number of timesfrom SJPdP in April. This year April 12th. This year was quite warm after the first few days, compared to my other years. I have had years it rained almost everyday and others where my rain gear did not come of out...
This was the first year I had seen entire albergues booked by groups. If you unfortunately were one of the few beds not occupied by the group, you sat by yourself at the communal dinner.
I was there on Oct 12, 2021 and the town and restaurants were filled with tourist during the day. There were closed places, but I actually thought they weren't open post-COVID. I may have been mistaken.
This isn’t a Foncebadon problem, it’s a holiday issue. I have been in other towns during big holidays and couldn’t find food. I suggest pilgrims know the holidays and plan accordingly.
I’m not sure there are “hundreds of poles” left in Santiago. I’ve taken and returned with mine (checked of course) on ten Caminos. I assume the poles left can be used by those walking from Sarria or only to Finisterre.
Also, Bouricott transport is a business in SJPdP and is unlikely to help take...
I know the holiday usually adds some Spanish (I’ve walked this time of year a number of times) but the crowds are from everywhere.
See this post from Roncesvalles.
I sympathize. I am on my 10th Camino now and I have never seen so many people. Last night in Boadilla, they put down mats, the owner took a Japanese couple to his house and had to turn away many people. It’s more than just a wave. There are many groups, large suitcases everywhere and lots of...
I have walked multiple Caminos in both seasons. They are different in that the fields of wheat are green in the spring but after harvest in the fall they are fields of dirt. I’m the spring the vineyards are sticks, in the fall they are full of leaves and grapes and change color as it gets...
Started four times in mid-April and all accommodations have been tight or full SJPdP, Orisson, Roncevalles, Zubiri. I’ve always recommended to make reservations for this section. After that you should be able to wing it more except for sections before or after a long section without towns. You...
I love Beilari too. Just know that they are closed on Sundays, so if you are planning to start walking on April 17th (a Monday) you would not be able to stay there. If you are arriving on April 17th, I would try to get a reservation.
Even if the Napoleon route is closed you would most likely be able to get to Orisson. I start on April 12th and am staying at Borda. I have walked the Napoleon route many times, but have never walked the Valcarlos route. If the route is closed, I think I will walk to Valcarlos the first day and...
