I have travelled to a very many countries and only once have I bought a return ticket -AT THE BEHEST OF A TRAVEL AGENT. Travel agents and airlines love you to think you have to have a return ticket, or at leaast a ticket to a country you are allowed to travel to. It boosts their profits.
As I understand it, at Roncevalles only a third of the beds are bookable and the other two thirds are available on a walk-in first come basis. I read this on a thread in this Forum but cannot find it now.
I have walked the Frances twice in October and had no trouble finding a bed. During the last week of October there might be one or two closed but there will always be another albergue close by. November can start to be problematic but by then you should have completed your camino or in the last...
Some years ago I flew by Vueling Airlines Santiago from SDC to Barcelona and after a few days onto to Paris. It was half the bus or train fares and of course much faster.I have just checked with rome2rio and same flights are running, and fare depends on dates. Vueling is the cheap domestic...
PjonnyS. Everything that has been written is good advice. I trained plenty before my first Camino from St Jean to Santiago by carrying my full pack (7kgs) in rugged terrain for up to 20 kms per day. So I honestly found the Camino easy (except for the first day which was tiring) and no blisters...
They are closed in winter mainly because the pass is closed from 1 Nov to April 1, so there is little point to being open with no pilgrims to stay. In fact they maybe required to close, as being open in winter would only encourage foolhardy pilgrims to cross the path in dangerous conditions.
I have been a hospitalero twice, once at a parochial alberge who did not accept baga and once at a private albergue that did accept. On my last camino (age 84) I often used the bag forwarding service.
There are 2 issues here
1 The forwarding of a bag does not imply that the destination will...
The time of arrival at any airport is when the aircraft wheels touch the tarmac, so you have to allow time for the aircraft to get to the terminal and for you to disembark, which could be 15 - 20 minutes.
But the Camino Portuguese ends at Santiago in Spain. I think the Le Puy route is a good option as the towns along the way are historic and beautiful and the scenery is magnificient
I can confirm what others have stated. When you arrive at the albergue Jesus and Maria, they will provide you with a credential for 2 euro and you can stay there for the first night. I did exactly this in 2015
There is a group of volunteers from all over the world who call themselves 'ditchpigs', organized by Rebekah Scott, a member of this forum. Every year around the end of November they gather to clean a portion of a Camino. This year it was part of the Portuguese, although most years in the past...
In 2015 I met a young couple who walked from St Jean to Santiago with two young children, I would guess 2 yrs and 3 yrs old. The parents pulled a chariot ( that was the actual name on the carriage), and the children could get out and walk or get in when tired. They carried some toys with them...
There are more alternatives to the already great suggestions listed above:
1. St Jean to Roncevalles: via Valcarlos
2. Estella to Los Arcos: via Luquin. Very beautiful
3. Fromista to Carrion de los Condes: Instead of walking beside a busy road with little shade, walk beside the river to...
I am writing about my post above regarding crowds on the Frances, in which I used the words 'true pilgrim'.
I have offended some of you by this term and I wish to apologize. I used the word very loosely and I firmly believe that everyone travels the camino for their own private reasons and who...
I have 2 friends walking Frances now. At Belorado they phoned 24 hrs ahead to book at Atapuerca and no beds available so they had a short day and stayed at Villafranca and tried to book again at 24 hrs notice at Atapuerca but no beds available, so they left Villafranca at 4.30am and hiked...
I have read his two Camino books 'The Day was meant for walking' and 'I guess I'll just keep on walking' and they are both excellent accounts of his walks, and can be obtained from him direct at his website www.noelbraun.com.au. He is now 81 and fit as a fiddle. He is on a speaking tour just now...
