Sleeping bag or just liner (starting Frances at SJPdP on April 25th)

I don’t know these , but I’d bring an ultra light down bag. I have one and used and appreciated it on 8 Caminos.

First Camino - Nervous and with questions about the start

Don’t stress about those things , just follow the crowd . That time of the year there will not be too many walker for the albergue, but enough on the path to see th way . The yellow arrow will always be evident . I have been over the Pyrenees 5 times and my only concern is a hard right in the...

    Napoleon or valcarlos

The Napoleon route is truly striking , it’s a challenging start but on a clear day quite a sight. I’ve been over it five times and proud to say down the trail I started on the Napoleon route , not Pamplona or Roncevalles or even v Carlos, “ start at the beginning and go on to the end “

Monasterio de Santa Maria de Carracedo

Hello , just after Villa Franco del Bierzo , there is an option to the right called the Pradela route that goes high on a Roman road that connects back at Trabadelo. It goes on the ridge line and offers great views on the main road route in the valley. I have walked it three times and one of my...

Where to stay in O Cebreiro

My choice is at La Faba just before O’ceberio. Quiet and well run. The you can see O’ceberio the next morning for breakfast and walk on down to Triacasta.

    SJPDP-SDC in 32 days-is this realistic?

I have walked CF five times and had a rest day or two and always made it to Santiago in 30 to 32 days. The weather is a factor , I don’t like walking on the rain.

How many people go right to Orisson?

Interesting question . Flying in from US leaves you jet lagged and nothing worse than pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion that could take days to get over ( or sick) I have always stayed a night at St John and left early in the morning , rested at Orisson and trudged into Roncevalles...

Planning My Camino on the French Way: May 2025

I have walked the CF in may and walked well and would advise the Pyrenees can be cold and confusing. My first walk to Roncevalles it sleeted twice on the way. I have never stayed at Orisson in five crossings but some do . It makes for a short first day, maybe 7 km. If you are friendly , don’t...

    Cruz de Ferro

Yes , that’s what I remember, I walked my first Camino before 2000 and it did look different that my post 2000 Caminos, it has become a county park instead of a memorial. When I went thru 4 year back it was spread with clothes, photos and wine bottles , not what I expect or want

Steep up hill - downhill like Alto de Perdon?

The walk down from alto perdon( windmill hill ) is about the max . If you’re past that nothing serious till O’ ceberio and that UP not down

    SAINT-JEAN (1st Day) failure rate 40%?!

I have been over the Pyrenees five times and it’s always a challenge. I have NEVER seen or heard of someone quitting, mainly because other pilgrims will encourage , help carry and support with water or food anybody in distress. My young son and I have put an arm under the arms of an exhausted...

    Alto Pradela route - amazing.

Have walked it twice and indeed a walk in the clouds. It was originally a Roman road and it shows . A good albergue in La Faba

What parts of the CF are too rough for a 2 wheel hiking trailer?

The tough day up O’ceberio is not open to wheeled cart , there is a road option for bikes in many rough spots. But you miss quite a bit

Finding my way along the route

It is easy to find you way on the CF mostly because you are so often within sight of othe pilgrims. There are lots of arrows and shells to mark the trail .

    Camino Frances with kids

I gave you my opinion and you have offered yours . I’ve been on nearly a dozen Caminos and that’s my take
  16. howardd5

    Camino Frances with kids

None worthwhile , don’t bring kids who can walk a day, neither you or them will be happy
  17. howardd5

The French on the French Way

I like Piaf and enjoy her music on any occasion
  18. howardd5

Stage 18 a or 18 b (Terradillos de los Templarios to Bercianos del Real Camino)

The Roman road to the right is a long& lonely , but I think it’s the best option . The left route follows the road

    Camino Irritants

Some of the old extending walking sticks had a spring in the tip to take up the shock while walking . These springs caused a “whappa whappa “ that was indeed a real a irritant, I avoided those people like a stink and don’t hear it any more
