    Bouncing between Central and Coastal

I “bounced” between the SL/Coastal and the Central and I had a wonderful Camino. Porto - Vila do Conde - Rates - Ponte de Lima - Viana da Castelo - Spiritual Variant- SdC. However, with hind sight I’ve become a purist. The two routes are very different and have a different story to tell. You...

LIVE from the Camino Winter Camino Portugues Central

Lovely descriptions ! Thank you so much for taking us along with you !

Luggage delivery between Litoral and Central routes

It may feel like things are filling up but many places aren’t even taking reservations yet and most don’t post all their rooms on booking.com. We booked 1-2 days in advance and were fine and we stayed in some wonderful places. Focus on your training and getting used to your shoes and back pack.

Accommodation options on the Camino Portuguese: To book or not to book?

The municipal albergues do not take reservations so they are perfect for people like you who do not want to commit. The downside is you could arrive to find it full. I would suggest starting out this way and if it gets to be a problem you can start booking ahead. Some people are booking now but...

    Spiritual Variante

I brought some of that soap home! I put it in my family’s stockings at Christmas. Just yesterday my mother told me that she had asked my dad if he had any treats left from Christmas. He said he had some kind of fudge. She unwrapped it and it was the sisters soap! Oh dad 🙄

Backwards from Valenca to Caminha/A Guarda

Wow, inspiring words! Now I want to do a Portuguese Camino loop: Porto > Valenca/Tui via Central then along the Minho and back to Porto on the Coastal!

What not to miss on Camino Portuguese

You actually had to book a time slot in advance when we were there in September. You couldn't even see in the windows. I feel sorry for the owners and employees. I guess if they all buy a book, they're making good money but it wouldn't be my fantasy bookstore job :)

    Porto to Santiago

This is excellent advice! This is what we ended up doing and I never felt like I was missing anything. Of course, we didn’t see EVERYTHING but I always got to wander the streets for a while in the afternoon, sit in a cafe and people watch, choose somewhere great for dinner. Ah, I miss it so much!

"Ideal" itinerary for a leisurely Camino Portuguese?

Our itinerary was the same up to Ponte de Lima. There we went back to the coast. That second part of the Coastal was much better than the Porto to Vila do Conde part. I know everyone wants to walk out of Porto along the river but that is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. I just...

    Porto to Santiago

We only booked a few special places that far in advance. Most days we booked our luggage transfer and accommodation 1-2 days ahead. Accommodations were all fine to great and IMMACULATELY clean. They just don’t have the scary, dirty, infested, cheap motels we have in North America. Read the...

Preparing for a spiritual pilgrimage in Portugal: Tips for staying warm and dry on a budget

Congratulations! I’m so excited for you! I was relatively inexperienced for my Porto to SdC this October and didn’t want to invest in a lot of expensive equipment. Are you equipped?

Luggage delivery between Litoral and Central routes

I think we used Camino Facil for that transfer.

Interesting sites along the Portuguese Caminos

Ooo, that sounds so interesting! I'd love to hear more about what areas/towns are famous for. We walked right past Arcade not knowing it is famous for oysters. We did go to Calle de las Ostras (Oyster Street) in Vigo but no one was serving oysters. One place said they'd had an on line complaint...

Interesting sites along the Portuguese Caminos

Inspired by a thread on the Frances forum, I thought we could share interesting sites - architectural, historical, art, food, culture - that we saw on our Portuguese caminos. Since so many people are doing combined routes, let's not limit this to coastal or central. It might help people choose...

LIVE from the Camino HumanistHiker on the Camino Portuguese

We had a fabulous lunch at one of those side street grills 5 days ago! The little clams were fantastic. Tasquinha Porto de Leixoes, 50 R. Conde Sao Salvador. Lovely family.
