Monuments and cathedrals are great, but we did a wallking food tour and I would - "hands down" - recommend that if you only have one extra day. You can sample the pasteis de nata, the bufana, some of the eastern and african foods, and the wines and drinks that you won't get anywhere else. We...
We rode mountain bikes (not electric) from Coimbra Santiago via the Senda Litoral (after Porto). The Litoral and the Coastal because the same a few times. From Coimbra to Porto was extremely hilly and we ended up walking the bikes way too much - and it cost us a lot of daylight! From Porto...
We stayed at the Hotel Santa Justa. It's on a pedestrian street with an easy walk to restaurants and down to the waterfront. Wonderful breakfast and they have a restaurant as well.
The sardine cannery in Matosinhos. https://www.conservaspinhais.com/. Conservas Pinhais. They have a fantastic tour and tasting room!! I highly recommend it.
Rocks were BiG. We had to carry our bikes.
As far as secure storage….we were liable for our rented bikes so we’re very careful. In the “secure” area, we locked our bikes to anything stationary or to each others (there were 6 of us). Totally a personal decision, but hostels and albergues are...
I have ridden to Santiago from Coimbra, and the next year from Porto....both trips were on the Senda Litoral/Camino Costa after Porto. First trip, I was 70, second I was 71. We are avid bikers and were very ambitious on the first trip from Coimbra and planned daily mileage a bit longer than...
Tuitrans does luggage transfer town to town in Portugal. Caminofacile does town to town transfers from Porto to Santiago.
Just a note....the biking from Coimbra to Porto can be somewhat grueling. We biked in September and found it to be much harder than we expected. It is very hilly - not...
Just FYI....we biked the CP a couple weeks ago. The route from Coimbra to Porto is extremely hilly with very steep sections (they were short but it was a slog). A stage of 38 miles (which we normally do in 3 hours or so) took us like 7-8 hours because we had to walk up so many of the steeps. We...
Also, buy some Compeed blister patches at the farmacia. Put them on and do not remove them. Shower, walk, whatever and they will fall off when your blisters have healed. They are cushioned so it shouldn't hurt too much to walk. I think they are a miracle!!
Take a taxi to O Milledoiro. You are about 1.5 hour walk from there (4.5 miles). Have the driver drop you off at the Centro de Cultura....it's right on the path. Get a sello at your hotel, then at the center or one of the cafes there before you start walking.
