CP or CF?
Short answer: Yes. (Also to France, BTW)
Seriously, though, they're both great. Cobblestones? Many fewer on the CP than the CF, IMO (but that may have been due to taking the coastal route). As noted above, there are sections where you're on narrow roads with no shoulders, but not...
Chris, here are the towns/places we hit on the Rota (2016 prices). I had to consult my logbooks, and now I'm super jealous that you're going on this trip - We loved it! If you haven't already, you should get the official guidebook. Hopefully, by now, they have a south to north version (they...
Making eye contact is considered to be aggressive by the dog, so I highly recommend against it. Remain as calm as possible, throw something, but if attacked don't hold back or feel sorry - the dog certainly won't.
A little late to the thread, but here's something I posted in March of 2017:
I have used steps similar to those described in this article: http://www.wikihow.com/Handle-a-Dog-Attack . One thing to note is to not hit a dog on the head - they have thick heads and you'll only make them angrier...
We really liked the Nice Way Hostel when we were there in 2016. It had only been open two weeks at that time so there were a couple of kinks I'm sure have been taken care of since then, but nothing serious. Very clean and friendly, highly recommended.
If you have the time, take a motorcycle...
We enjoyed Sagres as our starting point for our Portuguese Camino, heading north up the Rota Vicentina. Warning: Once you start on the RV, you may not want to stop! ;)
But to go off-topic on your off-topic, where are you hiking in Italy? We're going to be there in late May and are looking into...
We took the coastal route out of Porto which was well-marked and, yes, we then cut back inland to pick up what I'll call the main CP route. We looked at it in as many ways as we could think of to avoid asphalt, but eventually decided we needed to be on the N309 to get to Arcos. It was actually...
We did the CP (after starting in Sagres and taking the Rota Vicentina) last year, and we had a great time. Weather was awesome while we were there, end of May to first of July. Highly recommend the coastal route out of Porto. We cut inland at Anguiras and headed to Vila do Conde then on to...
Hah! Me, either - I think I packed it in about halfway through. Usually famished while hiking, this was the first time on the trail I couldn't finish a meal. :D
I ate a Francesinha on a dare from my girlfriend. Bread, ham, linguica, fresh sausage (chipotle), steak or roast meat (?!?), cheese, tomato and beer sauce. It’s the orange sauce it swims in that makes it extra “especial”! Quite possibly the worst thing I have ever done to myself. ;)
This is how we did it. Some of the mileages (not kilometers!) might look like more than you want to do, but except as noted we didn't experience too many difficulties. (BTW, I rounded distances up - the actual mileages will probably be slightly less, depending upon where you stay.) Good luck...
Here’s some information I previously posted about our experience going from Porto to Santiago in June/July of 2016. We actually started in southwestern Portugal on the Rota Vicentina, but I’ll skip all that except to say it’s fantastic! It took us 11 relatively easy days to go from Porto to...
Porto recommendations:
1. Take a motorcycle sidecar tour with Side Ride Tours http://side-ride.pt/en/ . We didn’t know about/go on it until the night before we left, which was unfortunate because our driver showed us many places we wish we’d known about. It’s a great way to get a feel...
We didn't use Brierly for the coastal - he gave it short shrift. We combined the coastal and inland trails. It is urban from Porto to Angeiras, but it's well marked and much of it is on boardwalks by the ocean so it's not too bad. Once you get to Angeiras it becomes less urban. Out of Angeiras...
If you have time, check into taking a motorcycle sidecar tour with Side Ride Tours http://side-ride.pt/en/ . We didn’t know about/go on it until the night before we left, which was unfortunate because our driver showed us many places we wish we’d known about. Regardless, it’s a great way to get...
We took the coastal route out of Porto towards Matosinhos – it wasn’t particularly well-marked, but not too big of a problem. Once in Matosinhos, the Turismo gave fantastic directions and the trail became mostly well-marked boardwalks, so if you really want to do some coastal, I can recommend...
If you have the time, I recommend starting with the Rota Vicentina, then doing the Portuguese. We did that starting in Sagres, Portugal on May 24, taking the RV's historical way, then picking up the Fisherman's Trail in Odeceixe. On the Fisherman's Trail, there was incredible scenery and...
