The Portuguse Route is flatter, the food is way better, the people are friendlier, the language more lyrical. Best stop was Templar Castle. Best meal was roast suckling pig in Mealhada, Less pilgrims -then again I went in February.
Those winter Caminos are tough - but you are tougher----
I did three in Febuary -
Caminos were deserted in the winter - very lonely.
Eventually=== you will conect to others and they will lift you up.
Call ahead to Booking.com - Take a taxi and skip a section if no accomdations.
Go to Gronze to...
The trick to walking on the cobbled roads in Portugal -- is to walk at the extreem edge of the road.
Were the Cobbles are covered with sand and dirt - way less irregular pressure on the feet. Flatter there.
Go to the sides of the roads/ do not walk up the middle.
It is not a sin--- to take a...
The word “Sé” refers to the governing center, or “seat,” of the district where the church is located. The Vatican is therefore located at the Holy See in Rome, or the “holy chair,” designating an ecclesiastical jurisdiction.
The Sé Cathedral’s construction began in the twelfth century, and the...
We pilgrims get a lot of slack from others.
Both locals and other pilgrims.
They give us discounts at their hotels.
Sometimes they do our laundry for free.
Pilgrims help others lug their stuff.
They (locals) put out water for us.
Other walkers-- kindly listen to our problems.
They share food -...
Same dream of the Portuguese route - you should contact this guy!
Geof worked in the White House during the Reagan Admisinstration -held a five year Portuguese residency card. Moved to Portugal and puchased an albergue on the Camino! He might be ready to sell!
About 10 km out of Rubaies is...
Templar Castle - the absolute highlight of my Portuguese Camino From Lisbon. Tomar Portugal.
And Fado Band in Coimbre - fantastic city.
Jungle Boy is right - route is flat- language is lyrical - people are super friendly and food is much better than on the French Route.,
I walked through Valencia about 2 pm and the place was crawling with tourist - it is very commercialized inside the Fort with folks selling cheep goods from China!
After the tour buses leave at 4pm the place becomes a lot more romantic and historic.
I crossed the bridge into Tui and stayed at...
Good choice about doing one of the easy Caminos like the Portuguese. It's really flat. Way easier
( In Physics foot/pound is the amount of weight elevated each foot. Lifting 135 pounds 2 feet = 170 foot/pounds.)
The Primitivo in the Cantabrian Mountains (perhaps one of the hardest routes)...
The people who are convinced that they have all the answers are - well - lets say they not really enlightened.
Yes the people on this web- site are authentic - spiritual warriors - searchers.
We are not the objects of our awareness - the things our monkey mind attached itself, We are pure...
I can recommend the Poet's Inn in Porto.
It is right on the Camino route and very centrally located.
Don't miss the Se Cathedral and the Soares dos Reis National Art Museum as well as the Musea da Misericordia in the church by the same name. All just a short walk from the Poet's Inn. 40 Euros...
I totally agree that if I did it again I would start in Tomar where I would spent the whole day before starting ----touring the Templar Castle there.
I walked in February and encountered just two other pilgrims the entire 375 km ( a couple from France) from Lisbon to Porto. Plus one Polish guy...
The Portuguese Camino is the best- flat, beautiful language and soulful people - great food! It was by far my best Camino Experience of the three that I did. Fado Band in Coimbre- I danced in the streets! I was so happy in Portugal.
“We have a very important word in Portuguese that has no...
When I walked from Lisbon (only 1 percent of all pilgrims start there) I used the John Brierley Guide Book
-Camino Portugues -Lisbon-Porto-Santago which has both Central and Coastal Variant. Excellent maps - I would tear out the map each day an put in a Ziploc bag for easy access in my pocket...
From the Journal I kept while walking the Portuguese route from Lisbon.
Most pilgrims who walk the Portuguese Camino will start in Porto, where they obtain their pilgrim credentials at the Porto Cathedral (also known as the Sé do Porto). Few times in my life have I been in a place that so...
Check out the "Poet's Inn" in the Theater district of Lisbon as a great place to stay. Private and shared accomodations. (Largo do Chiado- Exit of subway).
Get coffee at the iconic A Brasileira Cafe there.
The Basilica of the Martyrs is just a block away where you can get a "Carimbo" stamp and...
I did the Portuguese in February and March and it was never below freezing in the morning, usually getting up to at least 50 even over 60 by noon. I am from Maine so it was like summer to me.
Only 1 percent of all pilgrims do the Portuguese from Lisbon as I did. I saw just one pilgrim couple the...
Students at the University of Coimbre busking in the street to make extra college money in an all-male Fado band. Looks like three Fado guitars - one of which is quite small. Saw these guys on my Portuguese Camino from Lisbon which I did in the winter. Unlike Lisbon Fado where women sing and...
