Alex,
I also live on the East Coast and go to Porto several times each year (I lead tour groups on the Camino). I always purchase a multi-destination ticket - believe it or not from Newark International Airport it is the most economical route.
I fly from Newark to Porto and my return trip...
Hey nycwalking, I walked my first Camino in 2012. Since then I've walked 10 different Caminos and am now leading tours on the Camino. I will be leading 3 different tours on the Camino this Spring and 2 more in the Fall. - you are never too old to begin walking!

Susan,
I run tours on the Camino Portuguese, both on the Traditional and Coastal Routes. We stay in Porto for two nights before beginning the actual walking. But the route out of the city is industrial and busy, it is much nicer to begin walking on the first day at a quieter less busy path...
I've walked both the traditional inland route as well as the coastal. This summer I will be leading a tour group of Grandparents and Grandchildren on the Coastal from Matosinhos to Vigo. Both routes are fabulous, in fact I will say the Caminho Português is my favorite route to Santiago.
