Have you considered doing the Senda Litoral out of Porto, @Wexford? It's along the river and the beach and is supposed to be a much nicer way to exit Porto. You can connect up with either the Coastal or Central route further along. You can find my plan (Senda Litoral > Central > Variante...
I use both. I use Brierley for navigating, distances, to pore over whilst grabbing a coffee or beer etc. and use the Wise app for albergue information and user comments. If I see a comments about bed bugs I keep on to the next one.
I have the Brierley book and the Wise Pilgrim app on the phone. I use the app to help choose accommodation for the night as it has reviews from other pilgrims on it. If there's a review that mentions BED BUGS, I avoid it.
Maybe you could do the Senda Litoral for a bit of beach exposure and then switch to the Central route further along. The Variante Espiritual is a nice little add on too as you get to go out on the water by ferry for one leg of it. I plan on doing just that next year. I outline my hows and...
