    Walking in reverse

Of course you can flipflop and walk the other way, although the VF signposting is mostly towards Rome. In 2018 I met two Italians who walked to Santiago from Rome and sometimes found it difficult to find the route Northwards. Best thing probably is to load the GPX data from the official Via...

    Via Francigena

For luggage transport, look at the Sloways website. I have no idea if they work only between Lucca and Rome, or include also other parts of Italy. In 2018 and 2019 I walked in two parts from Gran San Bernardo to Rome. The signposting is excellent. You can not get lost if you rely on signposting...

    Po Valley in April?

In 2018 I crossed the Po Valley in the second half of September. I had no real issues with mosquito's or heat. The Po Valley was much better than I expected. Quiet lanes, tracks and country lanes, crossing a lot of small towns. I think April will be fine as well, as the real hot and mozzie...

VF - Arrival at Calais Port

You don't follow the path of the Lord but a man-made route designed in the 21th century that follows less than more a route taken long ago by the British bishop Sigeric on his way to Canterbury back from Rome He did not cross at Calais, but more to the West. Hence the strange zigzag after...

Three Camino's done. The next one feels like the first.

The Way of Saint Francis and the Via Francigena are different routes. Maybe it is a good idea to create separate forums for them.

VF - walking on the side of the highway or on designated paths.

Last year I walked from the Grand Saint Bernard to Massa (two stages before Lucca). I followed the signs, helped by the GPX from the official website. Only on a few occasions I walked on the verge of busy highways close to speeding traffic and heavy lorries. The most notable example were about...

BBC TV series on Via Francigena

Those celebrities are a bit all kinds of everything. For me as Dutchman only the name Dana ringed a bell.

VF - Arrival at Calais Port

The free Via Francigena App recently added the official route through France. I know that some argue that the official VF makes too much detours in France , but I think it nevertheless can be very helpful. Surely in finding your way in the Port of Calais. https://www.viefrancigene.org/en/app/

    Via Francigena Affordability?

The Via San Francesco and the Via Francigena are completely different routes, as far as I know, but apparently there is some confusion as both caminos have Franc in their name. See the map: https://caminoist.org/past-caminos/via-san-francesco-2014/ The Via Francigena is very well signposted...

Early stage Via Francigena planning query and the town of Robbio

There is a small ostello in Robbio, run by the municipality. I stayed there with four other pilgrims in September 2018. You must call them in advance, and then someone of the town hall will give you the key and show you the facilities. It is indeed basic but doable. Some walk Vercelli - Mortara...

VF query - ostello in Orio Litto

In general there is only a morning ride at 9.00 a.m., but ferryman Danilo only shows up if you phone him the day before. Maybe he makes a second crossing if there are more pilgrims about the same time in the day, but it is improbable that he makes a second ride just for one passenger.

    St Bernard

Ça dépend de la neige dans l'hiver. Je pense que ce peut être très difficile. Il y a un petit guide (en anglais) sur le Grand Saint Bernard. See: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/gsb-a-guide-to-crossing-the-great-st-bernard-pass.59812/

How busy is the Via Francigena in September/ October

Between 6 September and 6 October I walked from Gran San Bernardo to Massa, Toscana. Only two times there were issues. The ostello in Ivrea was full, but they offered to bring me to another place outside Ivrea. I decided however to find a room via Bookings. I think that the ostello was complete...

VF query - ostello in Orio Litto

Orio Litta is a very fine ostello. I used a liner but don't remember if I needed a blanket. It was warm at the time. Someone in our little group or Mayor Pierluigi called the day before with Danilo who in general is at 9.00 at the ferry. I estimate the distance to the ferry is about 4...

Via Francigena or Via de la Plata again?

The waymarking in Italy is excellent. I walked in September/October from Gran San Bernardo to Massa (a bit halfway to Roma) and met other pilgrims almost every day. The VF in France is more lonely, as pilgrims starting in Canterbury told me.

GSB: A guide to crossing the Great St Bernard Pass

So it is the best to go over GSB between 1 June and 30 September. If you want to go earlier or later, be well prepared with Tim's advice. Here is some footage of a Dutch couple in the snow and the cold. It is not clear for me in which month they crossed GSB.

River Po boat crossing - solo?

Orio Litta's Mayor Pierluigi is a cyclist and also a great fan of the Via Francigena. Big chance that he will wave you off at the ferry in Torre San Andrea. By the way, it is only four klometers from Orio Litta to the ferry.

River Po boat crossing - solo?

As far as I know Danilo does one crossing a day, at 9.00 a.m., regardless of the number of passengers.

    Via Francigena Affordability?

I have walked Camino Mozarabe from Almeria to Merida and Via Francigena from Gran San Bernardo to Massa (Northern Tuscany). Eating and accomodation on the VF is more expensive than on the Camino. There are many ostello's, generally 10 euros per night, sometimes 15 or 20. When there is no place...

    Efrén Gonzáles' youtube/Camino vlogs.

Efren has reached Rome. These days he is posting his one-minute blogs of the stages he did in the last weeks. We are all waiting for the longer vlogs of the whole Via Francigena, which probably will take him more time to edit.
