Anyone know how much road walking is involved?
We walked that section of the Via Francigena in the Spring of 2014. There was a LOT of road walking at that time but I know there have been attempts to get the route off the roads. Via Francigena
We walked the VF from Martigny to Rome last spring and it was wonderful. The sign posting was pretty good for much of it and we never had any difficulty finding accommodation. Would be happy to send you our plans and answer specific questions.- sjagger

We loved the VF because it felt to us what we imagine the Camino Frances might have felt like 25 years ago. Indeed of the pilgrimage routes we have walked, this was one of our favorites.
