Thanks for all your suggestions, we found a great solution; we just hire a car!
We leave in our own time, obviously pre-arranged pick up from Santiago Train Station, big drive on the day, but we can stay the night in Burgos en-route back, and drop the car at Bilbao Airport... no messing, all...
Hi folks, anybody made this trip reciently? we have a day to get back from Santiago to Bilbao, whats the best way? i.e cost against duration etc.
Anybody used the bus for this route before?

Hola Terence, if you fly out to or from Santiago de Compestella, you have to stop in Madrid, and vice versa.
If you are flying in to start your pilgrimage any where else along the French route, or others that walk East to West, unless you are travelling from just over the French border, Bristol...
