In 2016, I took the overnight train from Paris to Bayonne in a 4-bed couchette, and it worked fine. It's like a hostel on wheels. In Bayonne, I took the bus to SJPP. I would do it again.

I took the train from Paris to Bayonne and then bus/train to SJPP. It might be a good idea to get a hostel reservation to make sure that there's a place to stay at the outset. After that, the Brierly book is the best guide.
The deluxe bus (not that much more expensive than the regular) is a delight. If you allow yourself a day to explore Porto, it's amazing. Walking through the medieval community on the side of the river was an education in itself, as well as the museum of exploration.
