I caught a very early flight from Stansted to Santiago (Thursday only) in time to catch one once a day direct bus to Sarria. Lunchtime arrival meant a reasonably leisurely walk that afternoon. You can go via Lugo and change buses there.
It looks a very dreary industrialised route. I took a bus from the centre to Virgin de Camino - not expensive and only.took 20 miutes or so. From VdeC you have a choice of two routes. I took the more rural one ( still wasnt a very beautiful stretch.) Your reward is that Astorga awaits you...
I arrived c 11pm in April last year and decided to taxi to my hostal. No problems checking in - it is Spain after all - but I think an albergure would be a problem.

If you are of pension age, you can buy a train pass for discounted travel - a tarjeta dorada. Booking well in advance is often cheaper

Alsa offer the longer distance buses I think. I've had difficulty in the past finding and checking their timetables online so glad to hear about new ways of finding them. IF you're walking a stage and thinking of returning to do more you could photograph the timetable.
