For whatever it's worth, and not that this has anything to do with the current situation in Barcelona, but my wife and I were in Barcelona at the time of the 2017 Independence referendum. In spite of the reports seen on major American news media, we saw only a couple of peaceful marches. We were...
My wife and I stayed there in May 2017. I won't disagree with your assessment because we didn't get a room in the main building, which looks very nice and modern in the photos on the website. But they assigned us in a room the rather seedy building across the street which was old and dark and...
I hesitate to post this because it will sound like I'm reprimanding the OP (which I'm not) -- I'm posting for the benefit of future pilgrims. Over the six years that I've been a member of this forum, I can't count the number of posts I've seen regarding travel plans disrupted by railroad...
Brian, unless you want to go to Paris in advance for tourist reasons, I'd recommend flying into Madrid, then taking a bus or train to Pamplona and then bus to St Jean. See my PM / Conversation with my phone number--I'm also in Denver/Littleton.
Jim
I'd be interested in hearing from others who have done that. We tried to move our flights up after our recent Camino Portugués and the cost was going to be more than we paid for our original tickets (although our original tickets were purchased far in advance from one of the Rome2Rio agencies...
My experience after two stays at hotels "near the airport" is that many are not so near the airport and could result in a 20 to 30 euro taxi ride. Be sure to check just how near they are, and confirm that they have a free hotel shuttle both ways.
Good plan. If you're coming on an overseas flight to Madrid, you can do some sightseeing around Pamplona in the afternoon and use the night there to sleep off the jet lag. That way you can skip the sightseeing as you pass through Pamplona once you've started your Camino walk. By the way, if...
Aer Lingus had the cheapest fares to Ireland when we went there last year, but the "cheap" fares you see advertised only apply if you're flying directly from one of the hubs like L.A., Chicago, or Newark. If you need a connecting flight from other cities, the price goes up pretty quickly--but...
Be sure to verify the actual location of an "airport" hotel before booking. We booked a room at the Holiday Inn Express which was advertised as an airport hotel, and it was a half-hour, 30€ taxi ride from T4. They did not have a shuttle, and the Hilton next door would not allow non-guests to...
We transferred someplace, but I don't remember where it was. It was a pretty quick transfer -- it seemed like we simply got off one bus, grabbed our backpacks from the luggage bay, and walked right over to the other bus. And neither my wife nor I remember it being a 6-hour trip -- it was more...
Since you can catch the bus right at T4 at the airport, factoring in the time into Madrid from the airport may make it a non-issue. My memory is a bit hazy, but as I recall the bus took maybe 4 hours at most. The buses are really not bad, but do lack some of the amenities of the train.
There was a thread a while back where someone took a taxi from the Madrid airport directly to SJPP. If I recall correctly, the cost was somewhere in the neighborhood of 750 Euros.
Seat layouts can vary from airline to airline, but based on my own experience the Boeing 767 is my favorite wide body aircraft for long-haul flights if sitting in coach class. They have a 2-3-2 seat configuration, which means if you're in one of the middle seats or in a window seat, you only...
Now that's what I call putting it into perspective!
But seriously, I feel for those taller folks who try to squeeze into a coach class seat. It's hard enough for me at 5'-7" / 170 cm, and the airlines seem to keep crunching the seats closer and closer on every flight I take. You can request...
I've only done it once, and that was like Anniesantiago, fly to Madrid, bus to Pamplona, lay over for a night there to adjust to the time change, then bus the next day to SJPP.
Albertagirl's advice is well taken. I would only add that anyone staying at an "airport hotel" should confirm that the hotel is actually at or even near the airport. Before leaving Santiago, we booked a room at the "Holiday Inn Airport" hotel. We arrived in Madrid by train from Santiago very...
