Walking the northern coast of Spain

If I recall correctly Margaret Woodward walked round to Ferrol from Ribadeo. Check it out at Magwood.me https://magwood.me/my-caminos/el-norte-ingles/ I loved the part about the most beautiful bench view in the world and the coastline ‘cathedral’. It’s on my to-do list too...

Anyone started Camino Nord in Biarritz to Saint-Jean-de-Luz instead of Bayonne?

I flew in to Biarritz airport some years ago and walked to a hotel nearby and had dinner at a Courtepaille resto. The next day I braved the N highway and walked along the cost from Bridart to Hendaye. SENSATIONAL. I only found out later that I could have taken a ferry from the estuary edge at...

Many pilgrims at the moment, why?

I am on the camino San Salvador and even that is busy!! 7 pilgrims each night as opposed to almost alone on the Camino de Madrid. Minimal snow at Pajares by the way today and perfect weather.

    Albergues after Deba?

Hello Laurie, I have fond memories of the newly kitted-out Albergue at the railway station. The attraction is the beach... as you head inland soon after. If you did stay, bear in mind that there are no cooking or food storage facilities - indeed in 2015 notices that no food could be so...

    Francis Bacon at the Gug

I went this October twice to the Guggenheim. It was the most stunning visit ever! 1. Someone pointed out a small balcony on the first floor which lets you look out above the Serra steel display 2. The Paris 1900 - 1940 exhibition was tremendous. Loads of paintings you do not even get to see at...

    Words of wisdom please

I begin on 26 May from Asturias airport to finish the Norte so you may have caught up with me!! Can anyone tell me whether Aviles is worth an overnight stop, thus beginning on the 27th? I have cleverly missed the dispiriting Gijon to Aviles industrial area... And I branched off to Oviedo last...

So here begins an adventure of a lifetime

Hello. I must have walked 800kms and have perfect feet! Went from Bilbao to Gijon then bus to Oviedo. Primitivo to Santiago - not very demanding. Ahead by a week so took a bus (1 hour 10 mins) to Ferrol and Camino Ingles - a good one to end on.

    Walk from Biarritz

I just used a compass by the way! You had to walk along an N route then drop down when not permitted. 1 hour max of roadway.

    Walk from Biarritz

I did it in September from the airport to Bilbao. I leave again tomorrow to continue.. It was fabulous from Bidart. I had stayed overnight at the Ibis near the airport. You can eat next door at Campanille restaurant. Some road walking but coastal from Bidart. Do NOT attempt to find the French...

    Bayonne to Irun

I walked last September from the airport to Hendaye in a day. Stupendous when one got to Bidart and then along the coast the whole way. It is a great start and quite a contrast from the Norte. There was also the possibility to get ferry from the Hendaye waterfront across to Spain and then...

    camino norte questions

Just check the beds for bugs. A friend of mine was badly affected last year not far from Deba. I take boots AND sandals... As the sandals do for off duty and on duty when the feet are sensitive. If you can hike around Seatttle though in sandals then just go for it. I never use a liner though. I...

So here begins an adventure of a lifetime

I started at Biarritz airport and walked from there to Hendaye on my first day. Fabulous and so different to Spain. There is a coastal walk from Henday to San Sebastián where you take the ferry from the end of the harbour in Hendaye and avoid Irun altogether. I was not enamoured of Irun. I took...

    Walking from Bayonne to Irun

I had no problems walking from the airport to Bidart and then doing the coastal walk. The only disappointment was the grim Albergue I stayed in at Hendaye. It would have been better to go on to the Albergue at Irun. I might also have been tempted to get the ferry across the river from Hendaye...

    Accommodation Irun - Day One

Hello Vicky. I am planning to do the same. Arrive late on 4 September and will walk to the airport Ibis hotel. Next morning walk to the nearby Chemin du Littoral and continue to Hendaye, then Irun for the night and onwards. Found the trail online with maps and reference points though it does...

    Walking from Bayonne to Irun

I am actually beginning at Biarritz airport on 4 September as the walk skirts the field. First night at Ibis airport as a late flight... At least I know what I am heading for. Only as far as Bilbao due to time constraints... and having walked the Camino del Levant few months ago.

    Day one to San Sabastian

Hello. Am planning to begin on 4 or 5 September but arrive rather late on an Easyet flight from London on 4 September. Question a) any ideas as to places to stay at airport or in Biaritz and b) is there any point in beginning the walk in Biarritz, Hendye or St Jean de Luz and walking to Irun...

    Pictures from the Norte

Hello, I plan to walk for 8 days in September and wonder if I can start in Hendaye on the French border rather than cross to Irun by train. I would be grateful for sharing your experience and advising on the feasibility of doing this or whether you would recommend a more traditional starting...
