Hi, I'm going to be walking from Santander to Oviedo in a couple of weeks and plan to wear Asics Trail Running shoes. I've worn similar shoes on the Irun to Santander section and also from Porto to Santiago and never had a problem.
Hi Nuala,
That Santander flight on the 1st is not on the list of Ryanair cancellations. I was looking at booking the same flight on the 8th but went with Aer Lingus out of Bilbao on the 7th instead due to the uncertainty.
Sorry, just noticed your question now.
I didn't think day 1 was too difficult at all really but I'd rate day 3 as the most difficult walk I've done. I found it harder than anything on the Camino Frances.
It was a pretty warm day too which didn't help but the section from Deba to Markina-Xemein...
I walked from Irun to Santander last June and voted for the Irun-Bilbao section which I also walked in 5 days.
1. Irun - San Sebastian
2. San Sebastian - Zumáia
3. Zumáia - Markina-Xemein (very difficult walk!)
4. Markina-Xemein - Gernika
5. Gernika - Bilbao
That is some walking! Looks like you had a few days in or around 50KMs. You must have been walking for about 10 hours per day.
I did 50KM once and swore never again.
I enquired about this guide in the tourist office in San Sebastian last June and was told it is no longer in print. A shame because it is a very good free guide, the pdf version will have to do.
I walked from Irun to Santander last spring and found it was OK. Some difficult stages and very different to the Camino Frances.
I'm considering going back to complete some more this year.
Where exactly is the albergue with the rats? o_O
How is the weather so far? It looks a bit grey in your pictures. I'm having second thoughts about wearing my trail running shoes and thinking of getting a pair of waterproof walking shoes instead.
I've downloaded the guide from euskadi.eus and whilst it is very good for a free guide I'm not sure if it is enough in itself. Having done the Camino Frances with the Brierley book and knowing that the Camino del Norte isn't as well marked I've ordered the Cicerone guide.
So if dinner isn't available until later in the evening does this mean that the albergues still close their doors at 22.00 like on the Camino Frances or do they stay open later?
I'll be setting off from Irun in 4 weeks time and am really looking forward to it.
I see from the timetable that the 816 to Irun is not very frequent with most departures being early in the day. I'm due in Biarritz Airport at 21.20 on a Sunday which looks too late to get to Irun to start walking on Monday morning.
Maybe changing my flight to the Monday one which arrives at...
Hi Everyone,
I'm considering walking from Irun to Santander in June and found the below guide to the Camino Del Norte. Not sure if has been posted on here already but it is quite good for a free guide...
