There are lots of flights from the UK to Madrid and I’ve just booked my train to Zamora though I am staying one night in Madrid and then catching the fast train at 10.04am the following day. It takes just over an hour. It’s just over two hours from Santiago to Zamora depending on the time of...
I’m doing the VDLP in stages. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet and I’ve reached Zamora so far. I’m going back to Zamora on the 2nd June to do the camino Sanabres from Zamora to Santiago, about 20 days. Last year I went through endless Estancias, each with gates that required working out...
The one place that some of the pilgrims found difficulty booking was in Merida but this was in May. It’s also a tourist destination. I would perhaps book in the main cities for this reason. Also sometimes there are local festivals that aren’t noted publicly. I am doing the 3rd stage next year...
I’d book where there’s less accommodation in small villages, also incase they are closed and check for local Fiestas, especially at weekend; although the latter is more about private accommodation it can impact you.
Even in private accommodation in Spain, there’s little or no heating except in Winter and after a days walk your body cools down a lot so I definitely feel the cold at night. Fortunately on the VDLP unlike the other Camino’s in Spain there is usually air conditioning in private accommodation so...
The Casa Rurales are sure to know a local taxi service to transport your luggage and may even offer this service themselves for a small price or gratis. Some agencies do use occasional Casa rurales, depending on how close it is to the Camino. Some offer a taxi return service if they are out of...
I just finished the VDLP at Caceres on Wednesday 4th May and I heard the Municipal Albergue in Merida is closed due to the hospitalerios getting Covid. I’m sorry I don’t have more details of when and how long they are closed for but I gather there’s a facebook via de la plata page about this...
yes, you are absolutely right to give it a go as I will. I’m starting on the 21st April but hopefully you will find someone in the date section starting at the same time as you. It will be Spring so we should see lots of beautiful flowers along the way. I’m definitely taking something to sit...
Your experience of the VDLP concerns me a little as I found the Camino del Norte quiet enough after France and Portugal and I’m walking the VDLP in April and I’m now wondering if it will be too quiet. I’m glad I’m only walking as far as Caceres, if it’s that isolated. I didn’t think you were...
It is sad to hear that both Marketa and Rubén lost their jobs, due to Covid and that they had to sleep outside on several nights from lack of places to stay on the way to Santiago from Via de la Plata. If I understood the article, it seems the VDLP is being re-routed next year for reasons that...
Hi, I’m hoping to start from Seville on the 19th May as far as Caceres but haven’t booked yet.
As I’m only going as far as Caceres to start with, is it mainly on roads? I found the Portuguese Way was bad from Lisbon most of the way to Porto and ended up with black socks from dual carriageway...
