LIVE from the Camino Chrissy on the Camino Sanabrés

Enjoying following your journey Chrissy. If you are stopping in Xunqueira de Ambia I thoroughly recommend Casa Tomas.

Pilgrim numbers on the Via are down slightly

Looking at the Via Facebook page, there seems to be fairly large numbers at the moment and even some bed anxiety.

    O Cruceiro da Ulla

I'm sorry I have no useful information for you, I can only say that in May last year I arrived in Ponte Ulla and found O Cruceiro deserted. I resigned myself to walking on to the Xunta albergue 4 ks down the road and bought some food at the nearby supermarket, but as I walked past O Cruceiro...

Two pilgrims trapped in tree by a cow

I had a similar incident on the West Highland Way. A herd of cows in a narrow lane with stone walls on each side. They were placid enough but had they decided to move when I was walking past them I would have had nowhere to go. I climbed down to the nearby railway line and walked along there...

    Choice of variants on Sanabres

Yes, you are correct, just looking back at my diary, it says 30k for that stage.

    Choice of variants on Sanabres

The Camino does not go through Lalin, but passes through a small hamlet a couple of kilometres to the west on the other side of a motorway. This place is called A Laxe in the Wise Pilgrim Guide and the Albergue there is called Albergue Laxe. Looking at google maps the place seems to have no...

    Choice of variants on Sanabres

From Osiera to A Laxe (Lalin) is 23k. The route passes through Estacion de Lalin about 6.5 ks north of Castro Dozon where there is a hostal or you can walk 5ks further to the very nice Xunta albergue in A Laxe, which is where I stayed.

Accommodation Options Between Caceres and Salamanca

On arrival in Casar de Cacares I walked into the private albergue near the pool, to be told very quickly that the municipal albergue was at the other end of town. Whether they were fully booked or did not like the look of me I don't know, however the muni was fine. Very basic and the toilets...

First aid kit recommendations for Via de La Plata

I carry a fairly extensive first aid kit as I have found when you need first aid, you need it right then and there, not from a farmacia 10 kilometres away. I have 1 triangular bandage, 2 crepe bandages, 2 gauze bandages, a wound dressing, tape, gauze pads, various size bandaids, compeed blister...

Via de la Plata/Sanabres to Ourense or to Astorga? So confused!

Or head to the monastery in Osiera. A 32k walk from Ourense but well worth it. 30k the next day from Osiera to A Laxe.

Fuente de cantos where to sleep

Hi Jolanta, Unfortunately putting a mattress on the floor is no longer a thing. Fire regulations and a general tightening of rules have put a stop to it from what I have seen. Maybe booking somewhere a bit off the Camino and taking a taxi to and from could be the way to go.

Fuente de cantos where to sleep

I stayed at Casa Vicenta last April, very nice: https://www.gronze.com/extremadura/badajoz/fuente-cantos/pension-casa-vicenta

Thoughts on walking Camino Sanabrés in June

Hi BBG. I walked the Sanabres in May and found the weather excellent. Cool, even cold mornings that turned into fine and mild to warm days. I imagine April would be cooler and June warmer, but as far as crowds go there were a few more pilgrims after Ourense but finding a bed was never a problem...

    Need to book in VDLP?

Hi Miaka. I walked the VDLP in April/May this year and there was no need to book ahead. Even though there were more pilgrims than I expected a bed was never a problem, in some places there were 6 or less in an albergue with beds for 30 or 40. I only booked ahead on 3 occasions when I wanted a...

    Roman mile markers on Sanabres?

I can't recall any on this section, only quite a few in the south.

When to walk Via de Plata

Hi Susan, I walked the Via last April/May. This is a good time to walk although in the southern stretches there were some very hot days with temperatures in the mid to high 30s and there are several very long stages with no services of any kind. This changes somewhat further north however...

Camping on VDLP: Feasible or not?

You had no problems camping by the aqueduct? I would have thought that would be difficult given it's right in the city.

Camping on VDLP: Feasible or not?

There are plenty of places to camp unobserved on the Via. I met a woman cyclist who was camping most nights who said she had no problem.

Via de la Plata in April?

I too walked in April/May this year and found the weather excellent. A few hot days in the first week or two, but nothing that a little planning (early starts and plenty of water) cannot overcome.

    Which water?

The only time I have bought bottled water on the Camino is when I wanted the bottle, not because I was concerned about the tap water or the fuentes.
